E-mail scams target students

A dire warning about the possibility of a security breach in a Citibank checking account screams for action in a student's e-mail account. After reading the contents in the official-looking e-mail, he is directed to a Web site that looks exactly like an official bank site, down to the domain name.

New hardware to increase mail quota

IU is installing new e-mail hardware this winter that will replace the aging Shakespeare system and provide increased reliability for students. The new system costs $1.7 million and includes the addition of a backup server that will help prevent another lengthy outage like the one that crippled Ariel users for five days last week.

Brew fest broadens student horizons

It's said that while in college much of the learning goes on outside of the classroom. Thursday night it went on inside the Bloomington Convention Center. The learning might not have been conventional, but for beer lovers and anyone over 21, Big Red Liquors' 12th annual BeerFest was an amazing learning experience.

Hillel and Neal-Marshall Centers team up for diversity

Students interested in finding new ways to promote diversity in Bloomington focused on strengthening the relationship between the Jewish and black communities on campus in a discussion Thursday. To this end, the members of the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center and the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center met for the second annual Diversity in Bloomington dinner and discussion.

Author to address youth voting issues

Participation in presidential elections among 18- to 24-year-olds has seen a dramatic decline since 18-year-olds were first permitted to vote in 1972, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Biology club to hold nature walk at Griffy Lake

Beginning at 10 a.m., a nature walk will take place near campus at the IU Research and Teaching Preserve at Griffy Lake.

Buckeyes close to panic button

Let's hope the bye week for the Hoosiers was as productive as it could've been because this weekend the team travels to Columbus, Ohio, to face a troubled Buckeye squad. While the Hoosiers' season took a turn south after losing at Kentucky, they have a chance to right the ship with a victory over Ohio State this weekend. I know you're sitting there and saying to yourself, "Does IU really stand a chance against Ohio State this weekend?" and I'd like to respond with, "Did I stutter?" No. Maybe you haven't been paying much attention to the Buckeyes' performance this season so far, but I know I have, and it's been ugly.

Looking to Buck the trend

Since the inception of the IU-Ohio State Big Ten rivalry in 1901, the Buckeyes have dominated, leading the series 62-12-3. The Hoosiers will look to reverse the prevailing trend of the series when they do battle with the Buckeyes at 11 a.m. Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, at Ohio Stadium. Both IU (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten) and Ohio State (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) come into the game struggling. The Hoosiers have lost their past four games, with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of Northwestern, 31-24. Ohio State has faced similar woes since entering conference play, dropping three straight and falling out of the top 25. This is the first time since 1999 the Buckeyes have dropped three straight. A loss to IU would take OSU back to 1943 and World War II for the last time the scarlet and gray were mired in such a skid.

1,400 women to begin rush

One thousand four hundred women will wake up early Saturday to begin women's recruitment. They will load buses before 11 a.m. to tour different chapters, only to wake up and do it again Sunday.

Hoosiers return home for tough weekend matches

After snapping its 10-match losing streak last Saturday against Northwestern, the IU women's volleyball team returns home this weekend to play two tough Big Ten opponents. Tonight, the Hoosiers will take on Minnesota, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Golden Gophers come to Bloomington with an 18-2 record overall and a 7-1 clip in the Big Ten. "Minnesota is a great team," said senior Katie Pollom. "We have to be ready to play our best from the start."

IU travels for final away games

Hoping to further capitalize on a 3-1 record during its six-game road trip, including an overtime win Tuesday against Miami University in Ohio, the IU field hockey team will face Central Michigan University and Big Ten power No. 3 ranked Michigan State this weekend. IU looks to gain momentum as the two matchups occur two weeks away from the Big Ten tournament in Evanston, Ill. Despite a 6-7 record, Central Michigan comes off a 3-0 victory over Miami, pushing the Chippewas' record to 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference. Forwards Kristy Reed and Allyson Doan lead the Chippewas' offense. Doan achieved a bronze medal at the 2002 Junior Olympics, while Reed is a returning starter who totaled 30 points in 2003, including 12 goals and six assists. Between the pipes for Central Michigan is sophomore Danielle Frank, who has posted two shutouts this year for the Chippewas.

Hot IU wants to continue strong showings

The IU women's tennis team continues its fall season this weekend as they hold the IU Fall Invitational at the IU Tennis Center. Starting Friday, four flights of eight players each will compete for singles titles, while 16 teams will battle in the doubles bracket. The tournament will continue through Sunday, when the singles champions for each bracket will be determined.

Golden Boot on the line this weekend

The IU women's soccer team has its sights set on The Golden Boot and aims to bring it back to Bloomington as the team heads into its last weekend of regular season competition. IU will challenge in-state rival Purdue at 3 p.m. Friday hoping to reclaim the Golden Boot, which is the soccer equivalent of football's Old Oaken Bucket game between the two state colleges. The Hoosiers will then take on DePaul at 1 p.m. Sunday. "Considering Purdue has beaten me five times since I've been here, this game means so much to me," said senior co-captain Kim Grodek. "One of my goals this season was just to beat Purdue. I just want to get that Golden Boot one time."

Critical matchup awaits Hoosiers

IU coach Mike Freitag said the Big Ten regular season men's soccer title is on the line Sunday, making this weekend's game versus Ohio State (7-4-2 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) the biggest game of the year for No. 8 IU (10-3-1, 4-1-0). The Hoosiers travel to Columbus, Ohio for the their last Big Ten regular season match. Not only would a victory over the Buckeyes solidify the Hoosiers' regular season title, but the win would likely give the team a first-round bye in the Big Ten tournament. "That's a huge game for us," said sophomore midfielder John Michael Hayden. "Having the (night off tonight), we have to come out, we have to be ready to play. I think we're confident we are going to win." If the Buckeyes win Sunday, they still have to play Northwestern Oct. 29 in Evanston, Ill., and Michigan Nov. 6 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Big man verbally commits to Hoosiers

The IU basketball team's recent recruiting roll continued Thursday as the Hoosiers received a verbal commitment from Ben Allen, a 6-foot-10, 215 pound center from Melbourne, Australia. Allen is the Hoosiers' third verbal commitment in two weeks and will be joining Arizona guard Joey Shaw and Indianapolis' Arlington High School product DeOnta Vaughn.

Game Day Predictions

IU Offense: The Hoosiers have made huge strides in the passing game in recent weeks, and the running game can't be far behind. The Hoosiers will pass early and often to test the young Buckeye secondary, and expect a huge day from Courtney Roby who should easily shred the soft zone defense.

Dave Attell heads to B-Town for IU show

Comedian Dave Attell is living the American Dream. The comedian and "Insomniac" host earns much of his income by way of carousing about various cities into the wee hours of the morning. "Insomniac," the Comedy Central show in which Attell's drunken hijinks add up to hilarity, has made him a household name. Now after partying his way across the country, Attell will grace Bloomington with his presence at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in an IU Auditorium performance.
