They've gotten better

I don't know how much value you can find in a loss, but there must be something good that can come of IU's near victory Saturday against Penn State. Just one yard separated the Hoosiers from beating the Nittany Lions for the first time in school history. But as much as another loss hurts, you can still find evidence of success. For starters, the Hoosier defense has become a force opponents no longer anticipate playing against.

IU runners race into NCAA Championships with Regionals performance

The IU men's cross country team all but guaranteed its NCAA bid with a fifth-place finish in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Saturday at Eastern Michigan University. The Hoosiers finished behind NCAA-favorites Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Butler and Michigan -- who just squeezed IU out of fourth by a scant five points, 111-116, in the NCAA's most challenging region.

Musicians rally against I-69 construction

As musicians set up their instruments and tuned their guitars, Mitch Rice stepped up to the microphone and spoke Saturday night to a crowd of Bloomington residents who filled the seats of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. "The corporate forces are not taking over here in Bloomington," Rice said in a southern drawl. "We can't let highways define our way of life. We're not going to let them pave us. Help us fight this thing."

Defense steps up for Indianapolis in rout of Texans

INDIANAPOLIS -- The defense that took the field for the Indianapolis Colts in their 49-14 win Sunday didn't look like the one that had been out there the previous eight games of the season. The one that showed up at the RCA Dome tied a season-low for points given up, had five sacks and forced four turnovers -- two returned for touchdowns.

Hoosier Heartbreak

The Hoosiers found out the hard way why the last yard to the end zone is called the "longest yard" in their 22-18 loss Saturday to Penn State on Senior Day. Facing third and nine, senior quarterback Matt LoVecchio winged a pass to fellow senior, wide receiver Travis Haney. Haney worked his way down the field stretching his 6-foot-5-inch frame for every inch toward the end zone before being pulled down just shy of the goal line.

Journalism library receives facelift

It's been a little more than one week since the opening of the newly renovated School of Journalism library, and its patrons have only positive feedback on the improvements. Librarian Grace Jackson-Brown said the flow of students and faculty through the library has been slow, but responses have been positive.

Mr. Blanks, Please remember that your Chief George W. Bush won the election by less than 5 percent of the popular vote. According to you at least 48 percent of the voting public favors elitism. I would just call it intelligence. You might also keep in mind that the most popular reason people voted for Bush was for fear of terrorism. So to the contrary, I believe that the Bush campaign was much more effective at exploiting the fear tactic to win votes than the Democrats.

Study: Admit fewer students

A new report that could mark a significant shift in Indiana's higher education recommends that IU and Purdue University enroll fewer undergraduate students and increase emphasis on graduate education and the number of graduate students on their main campuses to prepare for the state's economic future.
