IU football to start 2006 season against Ball State

Despite being just a few hours away, the IU football team has never paid a visit to its northern neighbors, the Ball State Cardinals. That will change Sept. 9, 2006, when IU begins its second season under head coach Terry Hoeppner in Muncie.

Hoosiers earn top preseason ranking

Fresh off winning its seventh national title, Soccer America ranked the IU men's soccer team as its preseason No. 1 -- the team's third such ranking so far. The publication also named junior forward Jacob Peterson to its preseason All-America list. The Hoosiers will have one of the toughest schedules in the nation again in 2005, facing six opponents ranked in Soccer America's preseason top 25 including No. 4 Maryland, No. 8 Southern Methodist University, No. 18 Wake Forest University, No. 19 Notre Dame and No. 22 Cal State-Northridge in addition to Big Ten foe No. 17 Northwestern.

Last Friday in an interview with a German newspaper Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, said the Internet encyclopedia might start closing off some of its articles from editing. The idea is to create "stable contents," he said, to "freeze the pages whose quality is undisputed." For a project built around the idea of open revisions and continuous evolution of content, this is a very bad idea.

Man found dead in Bryan Park

A 37-year-old man was found hanged in Bryan Park late Friday night. Spencer, Ind., resident Carl Edward Runyon's body was discovered hanging from a jungle gym near the basketball courts off of South Henderson Street, said Lt. Anthony Pope of the Bloomington Police Department.

Expensive viola stolen from locker

The IU Police Department is investigating the disappearance of $20,000 worth of musical equipment at the School of Music. Graduate student Kim Hellgren told IUPD Thursday evening that her viola, bows, case and strings had been stolen from her locker on the second floor of the Music Annex sometime between 6 p.m. Wednesday, when she left the music school, and 6 p.m. Thursday when she returned.

Daylight Saving Time changes stir residents

Since World War I the United States has had some system of Daylight Saving Time (DST), with the general idea of "spring forward and fall back." However, the exact times and dates to change the clocks has changed several times in many areas of the United States since the implementation of DST.

Bringing spirit to the stage

The Windfall Youth Company is focused -- and not just on dancing. A non-profit Bloomington agency, the dance company promotes both artistic expression and service among the city's youth. On August 9 at 7:30 p.m., the talented group will stage their annual performance entitled, Who Moved my Leotard? at the John Waldron Arts Center (122 S. Walnut Street.)

Police nab suspect in bank case

Bloomington Police have arrested a suspect in the July 18 robbery of Old National Bank. Officers took Bloomington resident John F. Harlow, Jr. into custody Friday afternoon near the 1200 block of Chestnut Court. He faces a preliminary charge of robbery, a Class C Felony that carries a two- to eight-year sentence and up to a $10,000 fine.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- When students walked into class one Tuesday last semester, they knew it was going to be different than usual. Professors Sherri Porcelain and Miriam Klein Kassenoff had moved their classes to a different location, and cameras were all over the room.

Police investigating repeated car break-ins

Three vehicles were broken into Wednesday night in the parking lot of the Campus View Apartments. All three had similar methods of entry, said IU Police Department Lt. Jerry Minger. The cars all had windows broken and marks on the dash from where the thief apparently attempted to pry the stereos out. The cars had significant damage but very little was actually stolen, Minger said. A small amount of change was reported stolen from one car and a cell phone was stolen from another.

Report: More hate crimes found

A new report found 22 "hate incidents" in Bloomington last year, an increase from 19 last year. The City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission released their annual Hate Incidents Report, which covered the time period from July 2004 to June 2005, last Friday.

PHOENIX -- Wayne Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, will be the new coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, The Arizona Republic reported on its Web site Sunday.
