Strong earthquake shakes Japan, tsunami warning issued

TOKYO -- A strong earthquake shook northern Japan early Tuesday, triggering a small tsunami that struck coastal areas about 200 miles from the epicenter. There were no immediate reports of damage. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, hit at 6:39 a.m. (4:39 p.m. EST Monday) and was centered off the east coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the magnitude at 6.9, it said. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy.

18-year-old murder suspect caught in Ind.

BELLEVILLE, Ind. -- A man wanted in a Pennsylvania double homicide and apparent abduction of a 14-year-old girl was captured Monday after a car he was driving crashed in Indiana following a police pursuit, State Police said. The girl was found unharmed. State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said David Ludwig, 18, was apprehended at about 12:30 p.m. after a car he was driving crashed about 20 miles west of Indianapolis.

Dog House sponsors animal relief drive

The Bloomington city government and The Dog House LLC, a local company that provides cageless animal housing for out-of-town pet owners, are co-sponsoring a charity drive for animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. The DOG-n-KATrina animal relief drive, which runs until Nov. 30, will benefit Noah's Wish, a California-based charity caring for stray and temporarily abandoned animals of Slidell, La., approximately 30 miles northeast of New Orleans.

Center succeeds under leadership

Rhino's All-Ages Music Club in Bloomington recently moved into a new building to accommodate the growing number of people involved in the nonprofit's after-school programs and its weekend music venue. Behind the scenes, a group of young people makes that growth possible, working to develop those programs and run the weekend shows, but even behind those young people, one man -- Brad Wilhelm -- has helped Rhino's see its vision come alive.

Film screening addresses GLBT issues outside western culture

Students and the Bloomington public are invited to a free film screening and discussion that will spotlight gays and lesbians in the international community. The event is at 7 p.m. today in Woodburn Hall Room 101. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Support Services will screen the film released in 2003, "Dangerous Living: Coming Out in the Developing World."

Senior helps raise funds

Walking around campus, it's inevitable to pass at least a handful of students chattering away on their cell phones. Now Monroe County United Ministries, with the help of School of Public and Environmental Affairs student Sara Hinkle are cashing in on the prevalence of cell phones on campus. "It's an idea we had been working on and then Sara came in needing a project," said Rebecca Stanze, MCUM development coordinator.

Racial slurs shouted outside fraternity

A group of people riding in a green truck shouted offensive slurs late Saturday night outside Sigma Alpha Mu, according to an IU Police Department report. IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger said officers responded to a call of people driving a green truck with a loud muffler that passed by the fraternity, 1500 N. Jordan Ave., after 9:30 p.m. The people in the truck made Nazi hand signals and shouted "go back to the concentration camp" as they passed the house, according to the report Minger said incidents such as this are forwarded to the IU Racial Incidents Team, though he was not sure if this incident had been or not.

CHICAGO -- Granola bar sales are booming, especially in Los Angeles. Lay's rules the potato chip market but not in Philadelphia or Baltimore. And Oreos are the top-selling cookie, period. Those are some of the findings of a study of snack sales during the past year in U.S. supermarkets, compiled by Chicago-based Information Resources Inc. The results clearly show granola bars to be the fastest-growing snack category in the nine metropolitan areas where data were compiled.

Under pressure, Knight Ridder explores sale

NEW YORK -- Newspaper publisher Knight Ridder Inc., under pressure from its largest shareholders, said Monday it would consider selling the company and other steps to boost shareholder value. The San Jose, Calif.-based publisher of The Miami Herald, The San Jose Mercury News and 30 other newspapers said it would work with longtime financial adviser Goldman Sachs and Co. to explore a possible sale and other options.

Men of Color conference draws more than 200

In a turnout deemed "an absolute success," more than 200 people attended the second annual Men of Color Leadership conference this weekend at IU. Participants came from Indiana, Savannah State University in Georgia and Morgan State University in Maryland. Senior Dallas Easton founded and coordinated the event, held in the Indiana Memorial Union. Last year, only 20 people showed up to the minority leadership gathering.

Celebrate Diwali

As the house lights lowered at Jackson Creek Middle School Saturday night, audience members cheered in excitement. Music swelled. Performers slowly drifted on stage. Diwali, an ancient Indian holiday, had begun. Commemorating the Indian New Year and fall harvest, Diwali is celebrated by about one billion people worldwide. The holiday represents the triumphs of ancient lords over evils. In India, it is celebrated during a period of five days, a time when citizens exchange gifts, hold dinners, shoot firecrackers and light candles.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The IU men's soccer team achieved a first in the program's 15 years of participation in Big Ten men's soccer Sunday. But it wasn't a mark they ever hoped to hold. On a blustery day on Northwestern's campus, Penn State defeated IU 1-0 in the championship match of the Big Ten Tournament. Nittany Lion forward and offensive most valuable player of the tournament Jason Yeisley scored the match's lone goal in the 87th minute.

EVANSTON, Ill. - IU coach Mike Freitag said he is "very happy" with Sunday morning's matchup. The IU men's soccer team defeated Ohio State 3-0 in the semifinals of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament. The No. 3 seed Hoosiers face the No. 1 seed Penn State - who was the only team to defeat IU this season - 11 a.m., CST Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex on the campus of Northwestern University in the championship match of the Big Ten Tournament.

Colts beat Texans for 9th straight win

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Super Bowl buzz got a little louder Sunday as the still undefeated Indianapolis Colts, fresh off one of their biggest games of the year, beat the Houston Texans 31-17 Sunday. Still reeling from an emotional Nov. 7 win over the New England Patriots, the Colts were weary of a catastrophic meltdown, especially after what many players described as a "horrible" Wednesday practice, and almost experienced it.

Bears go the distance on 49ers

Bears 17, 49ers 9 Nathan Vasher returned a missed field goal 108 yards for a TD, the longest play in NFL history, and the Chicago Bears won their fifth straight game. When Joe Nedney's 52-yard attempt went wide right in a stiff wind on the final play of the first half, Vasher caught the ball over his shoulder, hesitated momentarily on whether to come out of the end zone, sprinted to the 15, then reversed his field, picking up a convoy of blockers.

Big Ten woes continue for IU

The IU volleyball team's Big Ten woes continued this weekend with losses at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans. The pair of losses dropped IU's record to 2-14 in conference play and 9-19 overall. With the pair of losses, the Hoosiers have lost 13 of their last 14 matches, including six in a row.

Team finishes 7th, runners advance

In the final race of an up and down season for the Hoosiers, the IU women's cross country team finished seventh in the Great Lakes Regional. Saturday's IU-hosted event exhibited elements of the team's highs and lows for the year, IU head coach Judy Wilson said. "I thought the lowest that we would place would be seventh," Wilson said. "The best we could have finished would have been third. With Larra (Overton) 100 percent and Kelly (Siefker) 100 percent, we certainly would have been third."
