Residences to be revamped, provide more privacy

As the next 10 years go by, Residential Programs and Services and the Residence Halls Association plan to have more suites and apartments available for students to live in on campus. RPS is considering several projects for the future, said director Pat Connor. The projects will mainly focus on the renovation of existing facilities, but could involve constructing new ones. At this point, however, RPS is not planning to change the overall capacity of the residential system.

IMU extends hours for finals week

The Indiana Memorial Union announced last week that it will extend its hours of operation during finals week for anyone who wishes to use the Union's quiet rooms for studying. The Union administration made this change because of the arrival of finals week, a time when students like to leave their residences in search of a more quiet, serene place to study, said Loren Rullman, director of the IMU.

IU medical dean named new science VP

INDIANAPOLIS -- The IU board of trustees has approved of President Adam Herbert's appointment of IU School of Medicine Dean Craig Brater to a new position as vice president of life sciences.

Man arrested for arson

Bloomington Police arrested a man Saturday evening for setting a series of fires in his apartment. The Bloomington Fire Department responded initially to an alarm at 5:56 p.m. at Arbor Glenn Apartments, 3100 S. Walnut Street Pike. According to the police report, firefighters went to a first-floor room that had smoke coming from under the door. When the firefighters knocked, Richard Mollett answered the door with the chain on and would not open it, the report said.

'Acacia Claus' benefits area youths

Local restaurant is part of growing 'quick-casual' scene

Walk into locally-owned burrito restaurant Laughing Planet just off Kirkwood Avenue and the local Bloomington flair is almost palpable. A Little 500 bike and jersey hang on the wall, each tabletop has its own colorful design, there are local magazines and handouts to read while waiting, the menu and specials are written on chalkboards and Laughing Planet T-shirts such as "beans'r'us," hang on the back wall above the tiny kitchen area.

Evansville community recovers from deadly November tornado

When Joanne Taylor stuck her head outside of her house Nov. 6 right after a tornado had just left only one wall of her home standing, the first thing she heard was her neighbor asking if anyone needed help. Broken glass was everywhere, she said, and it was cold so the neighbors brought shoes and blankets. Then they all went across the street to help a "little old lady" out of her house. This is just one of many scenes where the Evansville community came together during the tragic tornado in southern Indiana that destroyed Taylor's home, along with at least 300 others, killing 23.

Trustees delay decision to review president

INDIANAPOLIS -- The IU board of trustees postponed its vote Friday on whether to conduct a midterm review of IU President Adam Herbert. Trustee President Stephen Ferguson said in a prepared statement that the trustees would convene in a special meeting Jan. 14 at IU-Bloomington to decide whether they will follow the recommendations of a Bloomington faculty resolution requesting a special review of the president.

INDIANAPOLIS -- It wasn't a monkey that IU coach Mike Davis got off his back Saturday night -- it was a gorilla. And he didn't just take it off -- he threw it, as the Hoosiers thrashed Kentucky 79-53 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. "Our guys are excited about it," Davis said after beating the 'Cats for the first time in his six-year career. "We are trying to make this a good season and you can't get caught up in one game."

IU to demolish old Ashton buildings

INDIANAPOLIS -- The IU board of trustees voted to demolish seven buildings within the Ashton Center and renovate much of the IU School of Law and law library. The board also listened to remarks from IU President Adam Herbert about the necessity of securing scholarships for the University. The board approved both proposals unanimously during a business meeting Friday at IU-Purdue University Indianapolis.

3 Hoosiers named All-Americans

As the College Cup kicked off in Cary, N.C., and the IU men's soccer team stayed home for the first time since 2002, three outgoing IU men's soccer players received All-America honors. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named senior Brian Plotkin to the first team, while juniors Jacob Peterson and Jed Zayner received third team honors Friday.

Local artist brings craft of clay to kids

Karen Green Stone didn't always plan to be a potter. In fact, she had no history with clay until she substituted for an art teacher in 1975. Now she teaches "The Science of Art" at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St., and creates her functional pottery. "What it is is looking at the materials we use as artists and where they come from," Green Stone said about her class. "It's a way to introduce children to the natural world."

Law schools challenge U.S. military

If the U.S. Supreme Court rules against the Department of Defense, law schools like IU's could say "no" to military recruiters. The Rumsfeld v. Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights case, in which oral arguments were presented Tuesday, seeks to allow universities that receive government funding the ability to turn away military recruiters if they disagree with the military's stance regarding homosexuals. Under the Solomon Amendment, Congress can deny funding to an institution that prohibits military recruiting for any reason.

Museum showcases rare money

WASHINGTON -- As long as there's been money, there have been counterfeiters. An exhibit at the National Museum of American History reinforces that axiom. The oldest piece in the display is a 1690 two-shilling bill from Massachusetts. A counterfeiter good with a pen changed its value to 20 shillings.

Hoosiers battle adversity in roller coaster season

The 2005 IU women's cross country season began with high expectations and ended with disappointment. The team returned several runners with two years of national meet experience -- led by junior All-American Jessica Gall -- and began the season by taking first place at the Indiana Intercollegiate meet. However, after several mid-pack finishes in meets with a large number of competitors, the Hoosiers' season looked like it could not be salvaged. In the Big Ten meet, though, the team left its previous frustrations behind and snatched a fourth-place finish. "This season is really a testament to our ability to overcome adversity and to take on the obstacles we've faced," said senior Larra Overton.

Title hopes dashed after loss, IU tries to rebuild

For the first time in three seasons, the IU men's soccer team will not be the NCAA champion. While college soccer's national champion will be crowned this weekend at the College Cup, the Hoosiers can only reflect upon a season full of "what ifs." Notre Dame knocked the Cream and Crimson out of the second round of the NCAA tournament Nov. 22. The 2-0 defeat marked the earliest exit in the NCAA tournament for the Hoosiers since 1995.

IU grapplers rested and ready for weekend's Hoosier Duals

A week off usually lets a team rest up and get physically healthy. In the case of the IU wrestling team, it also helps to keep the mood loose in the locker room. Before a practice earlier this week, coach Duane Goldman found out that Cumberland University, one of the teams set to come to this weekend's Hoosier Duals, was not planning to come after all. "Is there any way that we can force Cumberland to come?" joked one of the student managers.

RCA Dome as good as home

The IU women's basketball team will try to retain some home court advantage when it takes on Boston University Saturday at the RCA Dome. IU is coming off a 3-1 road trip in which the Hoosiers most recently defeated Eastern Michigan 70-64 Wednesday night. Against the Eagles, IU jumped out to an early first half lead that never faltered, although Eastern Michigan made several comeback attempts. The Hoosiers allowed the Eagles to get as close as three points but held on for the win.

UK's Morris suspended for season

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The NCAA restored the eligibility of Kentucky center Randolph Morris Thursday, but said he must sit out the entire basketball season as a condition of his reinstatement after his unsuccessful entry into the NBA draft. Morris also must repay expenses related to tryouts for NBA teams, the NCAA said in a statement released Thursday, adding that the conditions were imposed "based on the seriousness of multiple rules violations involving dealings with an agent and accepting expenses to tryout for NBA teams."
