Barbie makeover

·

Valentine's Day has come and gone, but America's most famous couple remains broken up. It's been almost two years since the closely watched celebrity duo split, and many are hoping to see the 43-year romance rekindled. Barbie and Ken go together like movies and popcorn. But even moviegoers like a change of pace every once in a while and opt for a bag of Twizzlers instead. So no one was too surprised when Barbie split with Ken, flew to California and swapped love notes with an Australian boogie boarder named Blaine.

House reports shows inadequate Katrina response

·

WASHINGTON -- Government at all levels took an indifferent stance toward disaster preparations after the 2001 terror attacks, leaving the Gulf Coast vulnerable to Hurricane Katrina and contributing to the death and suffering the storm inflicted, a House inquiry concludes.

Mr.Popular

Things haven't been going well for the IU men's basketball team lately. We've lost five of our past six games, including a humiliating loss to a Minnesota team that was 0-6 in the Big Ten before claiming its first conference victory over us, as well as a loss at home in a must-win situation against Iowa. Not surprisingly, some people are calling for Mike Davis' head. Then again, many of them are the same people who have been clamoring for his head since the day he replaced Bobby Knight.

IUSA season in full swing

·

Covering elections can be a difficult task for newspapers, and reporting on IU's student government is no exception. With the announcement last week of two parties vying to lead the IU Student Association, the Indiana Daily Student is preparing to objectively cover the two tickets both on our front page and on our editorial page. From now until the elections, IDS news editors will work to make sure our coverage stays balanced even as our opinion staff formulates its own views on the various candidates.

Forget the records. Forget the statistics. Forget the over-thought analysis. This game is about who wants it more. The Hoosiers are reeling.

A new plan to make leaders out of IU professors is intended to help the University avoid another controversy about senior leadership, officials said Tuesday. "Universities are not good at succession planning, so I believe this program fills a real and important need" to train future University leaders, said University Chancellor Ken Gros Louis.

After flu, Davis returns to sidelines

·

For about a week, some fans might have been searching for Mike Davis. He didn't coach Saturday against Iowa because of a flu-like illness. His practices have been uncharacteristically closed to the media. And he left assistants Kerry Rupp and Donnie Marsh to do his radio show Monday night.

Computers track spread of illnesses

·

FORT WAYNE -- While the world prepares for a possible flu pandemic, most Hoosiers are just hoping they don't come down with the annual flu strain. So far, so good, doctors and health officials say. "It's pretty mild so far," said Allen County Commissioner of Health Dr. Deborah McMahan. "If we're going to get something, I think it will hit us here in the next week or two."

County chaplain counsels inmates

·

Monroe County Correctional Center Chaplain Steve Edwards encounters many prisoners who refuse to reform their lives, some who try but relapse, and only a few who ultimately manage to redeem themselves. "You've got to have tons of patience and be able to deal with a variety of personalities," he said. "You see so many capable and gifted people who are just throwing their lives away. You know, there's so much other stuff they could be doing."
