Sampson needs to go

If you know anything about IU basketball, you know who coach Kelvin Sampson is. You’ve seen his face on the display above the court and on T-shirts that people wear to games. You’re familiar with his trademark blue shirt and red tie, which fans have taken to imitating. At IU, we expect a lot from our coaches, and we usually get what we want. But lately, what we’ve seen from Sampson isn’t anything to be proud of.

200 tons of salt used Tuesday on 1/2 inch of ice

As a winter storm swept through Indiana Tuesday, students struggled to make it to class on slippery sidewalks while maintenance crews worked to keep up with the weather. But IU officials said it takes a lot more for the school to close.

IU hosts Wisconsin to start pivotal homestand

Maybe growing up’s not so bad after all, at least if you’re an IU basketball fan. The No. 13 IU men’s basketball team hosts No. 15 Wisconsin in a battle of two of the Big Ten’s top teams tonight at Assembly Hall. Despite the loss earlier in the season, several Hoosiers said they’re not the same team they were when Wisconsin badgered IU 62-49 in Madison, Wis., a couple weeks ago.

Overused rec facilities need repair, officials say

A decision by IU Athletics officials to begin charging club sports teams to use athletic facilities ignited controversy last month. But the real problem, club members now say, is a continued lack of field space that forces them to use varsity facilities.

Jacobs School of Music expands 2009 classes

A course on Bob Dylan will be added to the list of classes offered at IU in 2009. Music professor Glenn Gass received an $8,000 grant from the Summer Instructional Development Fellowship through the Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties to create the new class.

IU professor turns ancient artifacts into enchanting art

Digital artist Margaret Dolinsky’s says her favorite part of her job is “exploring the creative uses of digital technology with students.” Dolinsky a professor in the school of Fine Arts, was recently named the 2008 Outstanding Educator in Science, Engineering and Technology by the organization women and Hi Tech.
