Event makes students ‘more aware’

·

While attendance was low, possibly due to the overcast and drizzling weather, “Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n’ Roll” lived up to its billing with informational activities about alcohol, drugs and sexual assault.

French food for thought

·

"Oh my god, I'm in Paris," is what I immediately thought after the plane landed on the runway with a jolt. Then, once the initial excitement wore off a bit, I found myself realizing, "Oh my god, I'm starving."

Gallery North’s ‘Storytellers’ here through September

·

The walls of Gallery North were adorned with 3-D pieces of art Friday evening. In front of them, the guests stood speechless, many with dropped jaws. Behind them was the artist, with a grin on her face as she watched everyone attempt to search for a way to somehow describe her work. Catherine Burris struggles to find the words herself.

Sustainability: What is it, anyway?

IU President Michael McRobbie’s announcement last week of the need to appoint a full-time director of sustainability strikes the editorial board as both practical and heartening, if not a bit overdue.Just a couple of autumns ago, green plastic water bottles with the slogan “I Give A Sh*t” became almost as common a sight on campus as textbooks, backpacks or whatever else students carry around daily. They symbolized what seemed like a popular and powerful sentiment at the time: that nothing should stop one of the country’s largest and most wired universities from becoming more ecologically aware. Yet such short-lived campaigns (in spite of the popular price discount any bottle-bringers received at dining halls) proved nothing when it came to the airy issue of sustainability.

Column skewed evidence

In a Sept. 4 commentary, Chelsea Kane, chairwoman of the IU College Republicans, writes, “The top four of five states for gun ownership (in which Indiana is second) are also in the top five states with the lowest rates of gun violence.”

Pro-Lifers feminists too

In the Indiana Daily Student of Sept. 3, Indira Dammu wrote in the opinion section that pro-life Gov. Sarah Palin and feminists like her are “masterful at appropriating the word ‘choice,’ casting it as a catchall phrase for abortion.

How’s your history?

·

If you’re like me (younger than 25), your most reliable sense of history probably begins around the time you were born. Even so, our generation has filled out voter registration paperwork, watched CNN or Fox News daily and often perused USA Today or the New York Times (because, as students, we get it free) so as to pretend we’re reading something not spooned out for us on a digital platter.

Swept under the rug

·

Kids are slobs. Think about your room when you were younger, carpeted with Legos or those pointy little Barbie shoes or any number of other things that would send a barefooted passerby who didn’t watch his step to the emergency room. Even so, when your mom told you to clean your room up, it seemed pretty illogical, didn’t it? If you trashed your room, as long as you kept the door closed, what did it matter? And if company came over, why put on a front of cleanliness? Why run the risk of creating unrealistic expectations for the future?

Girl power? Not so much

·

The 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote in a presidential election. Since then, it’s taken 88 years for a woman to actually be a serious contender for presidency. The year 2008 could go down in history as a great year to be a woman, though Bristol Palin might disagree.

Plethora of rushing scores squash Racers

·

Last week, it was Kellen Lewis owning all of the yards on the ground. On Saturday, IU coach Bill Lynch split it among a tandem of running backs. The Hoosiers (2-0) easily beat Murray State, 45-3, and commanded the game throughout the evening. Murray State, a Football Championship Series school, was overmatched against an IU team that wracked up 477 yards of total offense.
