State officials team up to raise childhood obesity awareness

Gov. Mitch Daniels and 19 other state officials were just finishing their last steps in an awareness-building competition of physical activity to fight childhood obesity when IU students headed back to school from winter break. The sponsor, Virgin Health Miles, asked governors and state officials nationwide to participate in the Capitol Steps Challenge and track the number of steps they took during a two-week period using GoZone pedometers. The 14 participating state teams had to log their steps, and the state with the most steps will win $50,000 toward childhood obesity prevention programs.

PRIDE festival starts Thursday

Two of the many films to see at the upcoming PRIDE Film Festival from Jan. 29 to 31 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre put whimsical and homosexual twists on both a popular high school play and a French documentary, which explore the present-day lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer culture. Films like the “High School Musical”-esque “Were the World Mine” by director Thomas Gustafson and the documentary “Gay ... So What?” by director Jean Baptiste Erreca will be the two most interesting films to IU students, said Maarten Bout, marketing director for the Buskirk-Chumley.

Despite its production and changing release dates that garnered severe controversy, “Valkyrie” ends up yawn-worthy rather than breathtaking.

Sampson appeals NCAA punishment

Kelvin Sampson wants to return to college basketball in the next five years. That much is apparent from the Indianapolis Star’s report that the former IU coach has appealed the punishment the NCAA levied on him two months ago.

Cabrera rocks the bird

Ryan Cabrera began a performance-filled couple days in Bloomington privately serenading sorority girls Sunday and ended with a larger, public concert at The Bluebird Nightclub Monday evening. At the Bluebird concert, Cabrera let loose with the audience, encouraging them to party. Jesse Ruben and Zach Hexum opened Cabrera’s all-acoustic performance. Some professors prefer small class sizes to foster better relations with students

Though students complain about their homework load and cost of tuition, professors have their own complaints. Class sizes can affect the relationship between student and professor. Kari Johnson, a business professor for K-201, explains that with the amount of students enrolled in introductory level classes, large class size is the most efficient and sometimes the only way to provide students with the necessary amount of class sections.

Every student at IU has to make a grown-up choice at some point – where to live in the coming year.With second semester under way, students who have not already must begin deciding their residence for next school year, and with this search comes enormous stress.
