Fort Vegan plays home to DIY-rock

·

Man Behind the Sun will be playing a house show at 8 p.m. Sunday at 1222 W. Kirkwood Ave. — more commonly known as Fort Vegan —  with emo-core band Tristram of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Pleasure Blade, self-proclaimed as “Gloomington’s best/worst” knife rock.

Killing us softly

·

The Department of Justice “drone memo” published by NBC last week chills me. The memo says the government can kill one of its own citizens without due process if he is a “senior, operational leader” of al-Qaeda or an associated group, poses an “imminent threat” to the United States and the kill order is given by an “informed, high-level official of the U.S. government.”

Darwin Deez: Songs for Imaginative People

·

At first listen, an audience could hear the rhythm and voice of Deez and dance the entire album in sheer bliss. But upon further inspection, his bright music is darkened by his personal and often angry lyrics.

A critic's job isn't easy

·

As described by food critic in the film, “Ratatouille,” “The work of a critic is easy. We risk very little.” This is not true. As soon as the critic has achieved some level of reader agreement he is immediately unsafe, on the firing squad. One false step, one bad opinion where it counts, will destroy his reliability.

Ferris wheels, not chocolate and roses

·

Feb. 14 is fast approaching. With it comes one of my favorite holidays: National Ferris Wheel Day. This special holiday commemorates the birthday of the inventor of the Ferris wheel, George Washington Ferris, Jr. So go, enjoy the wonders that these magnificent wheels in the sky have to offer.

What begins as a quiet drama rapidly boils into a menacingly suspenseful thriller, twisting and turning with a Hitchcock-ian  precision.
