Arts day petitions for funding

In hopes of receiving additional funding from the Indiana Arts Commission’s budget, members of the Indiana Coalition for the Arts and other supporters gathered at the Indiana Statehouse Monday to remind state representatives why the arts are important.

Kinsey exhibits art on topics of war, sex, love

The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction’s new exhibit “Love and War” opened Friday in the Kinsey Institute Gallery in Morrison Hall. It includes photographs, comics, drawings and postcards, among other objects, from the American Civil War to the 21st century.

Senior Jared Boze has a Skype session with friends in Germany, and junior Heather Price drinks English tea. Boze and Price are working to stay in touch with the cultures and people they recently left. After months of studying abroad, they have returned to campus life at IU.

Blu Boy Cafe teaches chocolate artistry

On Saturday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, David Fletcher went from kitchen to stage, bringing tubs of ganache, a roasted cacao pod and a tiny bowl of crystallized cocoa butter. As a fundraiser for PRIDE, Bloomington’s LGBTQ film festival, Fletcher held a Sweet Meet & Greet that taught attendees how to roll truffles.

Lesley Ham, graduate assistant and curator at the IU Art Museum, said she has been working to identify a collection of prints by Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada for about a year and a half.

Promoter plays last Bishop show

Perhaps better known as the In-House Concert Promoter for the Bishop, Goheen has been working at the bar since it opened in 2009, a year after he finished his studies in music performance at the IU Jacobs School of Music.

Annual scholarship pageant to be held Sunday

The Gamma Eta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, will be sponsoring the annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant on Jan. 22. The pageant consists of 12 women who will be judged based on their commitments to the production as well as the showcase of their talent during the show.

*ask to promote new single Friday

“Painted Hole / Best Friends” is the debut single from local rockers *ask, but it’s far from its collaborators’ first foray into recorded sound. Each member of the  band is a veteran of the indie scene, and the new seven-inch is the culmination of a creative union that was long destined to happen. On Friday, the band will play a free show at Landlocked Music promoting the release.

McRobbie to guest host jazz program today

IU President Michael McRobbie will guest host a jazz program today, on the local public radio station WFIU. The show, titled "Just You and Me," will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m.



Baker

IU honors David Baker's 80th birthday with concerts

This weekend, the Jacobs School of Music will hold an 80th birthday celebration for Baker. Although his birthday was Dec. 21, the school said it wanted to honor the jazz legend in a manner that students could participate in.

Art bookshop provides for students, helps community

The sign was easy to spot. Inside the School of Fine Arts and up the stairs, another sign waited and, from there, still another sign, all of which eventually led to a small, organized room repeatedly labeled “Friends of Art Bookshop.”
