By the time the Hoosiers were wrapping up a 79-51 win against Iowa last night in Assembly Hall, the man of the hour couldn't be found on the floor. After a long and frustrating evening of being hounded by Dane Fife, Kyle Hornsby and most of the 17,456 fans, Luke Recker was buried in the middle of the Iowa bench. With just eight points to his credit, the former Hoosier standout watched as IU put the finishing touches on its 28-point victory.

Runners looking for sucess on national level

Several IU track and field distance runners headed to Indianapolis to participate in the Smith and Barney Invitational during the last weekend of January. The field for the 5000-meter, and various other events, included professional and unattached collegiate athletes to challenge the college athletes. The Hoosiers met this challenge in a big way.

Coaches rely on technology

Conspiracy theorists may be dismayed to find out that Big Brother isn't watching over the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The wall-mounted cameras on the diving side of the facility and the extensive array of portable video equipment on the swimming side may suggest otherwise, but, rest assured, are only the markings of both squads' coaches' dedication to applying improved technology to improving athletic performance.

Break 'crucial' to swimmers' success in post-season

After wrapping up its dual-meet season with a sweep of Kentucky and Cincinnati last weekend, the IU women's swimming and diving team has two and a half weeks before its next competition. It is a needed break for the Hoosiers who have competed the last four weekends and will now get the time to refocus and make final preparations for their most important event to date -- the Big Ten Championships.

Personal trainers working to keep everyone healthy

Getting personal while exercising has never been easier. The Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC) offers not only a student friendly exercise facility, but classes, information on fitness and personal trainers to incorporate exercise into student lifestyles. Cara McGowan, program assistant for personal training, said the personal training program has been established to customize an exercise plan for clients based on their needs and individual goals.

Recker battling through rough season

This was supposed to be it for Luke Recker. This season was going to be the one where Recker would lead Iowa to the top of the Big Ten. With Reggie Evans, one of the top players in the country, the Hawkeyes had the perfect inside-out game. This would be Recker's first full season of college basketball since 1999, when he was a sophomore at IU and averaged 16.1 points and four rebounds per game.

Recruiting class reaches nine as signing day nears

The number of names on football coach Gerry DiNardo's first recruiting list might reach double digits by Wednesday's NCAA signing day. Linebacker John Kerr (Cleveland), quarterback Graeme McFarland (Birmingham, Ala.) and wide receiver Tyke Spencer (Naperville, Ill.) are the latest names on the football team's commitment list.

Hoosiers brace for Iowa rematch

Steve Alford has done the homecoming thing before. He's entered Assembly Hall as the enemy. Luke Recker hasn't. Since transferring from IU to Arizona to Iowa, the Auburn, Ind. native hasn't been back to Bloomington to battle his former school. That will change at 7 tonight when Recker and his Hawkeyes meet IU in Assembly Hall. Alford, the former IU All-American and national champion, doesn't have much advice.

Team opens season earlier than usual

The IU men's tennis team wanted to win both matches Saturday. It got its wish. The Hoosiers (5-1) defeated the Southwest Missouri State Bears 4-3 and Murray State Racers 5-2 at the Tennis Center. IU was hampered by injuries but fought through them.

Hockey team faces off against Ferris, Michigan State The hockey team (15-3-2, 3-1-2) hits the road this weekend for a pair of Great Midwestern Hockey League matchups that should provide a preview of the GMHL playoffs in two weeks. First up for the Hoosiers is Ferris State University, followed by a Saturday evening face-off at Michigan State. In early November, these same two teams visited Bloomington and both walked away with losses.

Team prepares for Big Ten championship

Heading into their fourth consecutive weekend of competition, the women's swimming and diving team travels to Lexington, Ky., Saturday for a double dual meet with Kentucky and Cincinnati at 11 a.m. The No. 19 Hoosiers (5-1-1, 4-1-1 Big Ten) suffered their first dual meet loss last weekend against Big Ten foe Penn State, but will look to regain their confidence against the Wildcats (2-5) and Bearcats (5-1). The double dual meet will be IU's final dual meet before the Big Ten Championships begin on Feb. 21.

The men's tennis team (3-1) returns to the court Saturday when they host Southwest Missouri State (0-1) at 9 a.m. and Murray State (1-1) at 5 p.m. at the Indiana Tennis Center. IU defeated Ball State 4-3 in their last match. Coach Ken Hydinger, who coached at Southwest Missouri State in 1978, is optimistic about the upcoming matches. "We are fighting an aggressive spirit. We can't look past these," Hydinger said.

Meet offers experience; Big Ten's approach

This Friday and Saturday in the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse, the IU men's track and field team will host eleven other schools. The Indiana Relays feature opponents from several different conferences, such as Conference USA, MAC, Missouri Valley, Ohio Valley, Southern, and Sun Belt Conference. Some of the notable teams attending are Ball State, Cincinnati and Indiana State.

Indiana Relays inspire NCAA tourney hopes

Undefeated in dual and triangular competition, the women's track team will have an opportunity to compete individually this weekend. IU is hosting the 28th annual Indiana Relays 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Seventeen teams from eight conferences will come to compete in the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse, all hoping to improve personal records and to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
