In 1987, four Kappa Alpha Theta riders enrolled in qualifications for the Little 500 -- an all male race at the time. The squad wasn't trying to make a statement as much as it was looking for an outlet for its love of cycling.

Hoosiers pummel IUPUI

Everything went in order for the Hoosiers in the fourth inning of yesterday's 9-0 win over IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis. In the top of the frame, starting pitcher Allison Cooke had her only 1-2-3 inning of the day. In the bottom half, the team led off with three straight hits -- a single, a double and a triple. The triple, off the bat of junior third baseman Heather Suca, sent teammates Annika Ochoa and Brooke Monroe home for a 7-0 lead. IU added two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Stormy Hanson and a bases-loaded single by junior center fielder Katie Joy for a nine-run advantage.

The IU softball team returns home to host IU-Purdue University Indianapolis today at 2:30 p.m. at the IU Softball Field. Both the Hoosiers and Jaguars enter today's match-up with four-game losing streaks. IU (11-25-1) comes into the game after getting swept in a pair of Big Ten conference doubleheaders over the weekend at Illinois and Purdue. IUPUI (6-26) dropped all four of its contests against Oakland this past weekend.

The IU men's tennis team can't seem to put it all together. They are fighting, but to no avail. Despite a full lineup, the Hoosiers lost 6-1 to No.19 Ohio State on Saturday and then to Penn State 4-3 on Sunday.

Big Ten split

The IU women's tennis team split its two matches over the weekend against Big Ten foes at home. The team toppled Penn State by a score of 5-2 but fell to Ohio State 4-3 in a closely contested match. The weekend left IU with a 4-4 record in conference and a 15-7 mark overall.

Rain cuts tournament short

Torrential rain Saturday night and Sunday morning led officials to cancel the third round of the Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. With the results from the first two rounds standing up as the final results, the Hoosiers ended the tournament tied for sixth place with Auburn with a two round score of 592. UNLV won the tournament with a score of 576 (288-288).

IU, Michigan dominate

Four Hoosiers cracked the individual top 10 at the Hawkeye Invitational, but it wasn't enough to overcome the dominating play of Michigan. IU finished in second place with a 903 team score, 15 strokes out of first. It is the fifth time this year and second time in two weeks that Michigan has won a tournament in which IU competed.

Team takes two of four split against Spartans

The Hoosiers came away with a much-needed split in their first away series in Big Ten competition. IU (26-7, 8-4 Big Ten) swept the double header Saturday against Michigan State (22-8, 6-5) behind dominating pitching and defense.

At 0-12 in the Big Ten, the IU softball team is off to its worst start in school history to begin conference play. Illinois (25-16, 5-5 Big Ten) and rival Purdue (31-16, 2-6) both swept the Hoosiers in a two-game series over the weekend.

Hoosiers return home

The No. 36 IU women's tennis team returns to Bloomington this weekend to take on Penn State and Ohio State. The Hoosiers face the Nittany Lions Saturday and the Buckeyes Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and will be held at the Indiana tennis complex.

Team looks to keep advantage

Going for first Big Ten win

Having split both of its doubleheaders this week, the IU softball team goes into this weekend's competition against Illinois and Purdue in search of its first win in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers head to Illinois (23-16, 3-5 Big Ten) tonight for a 6 p.m. game. IU (11-21-1, 0-8) and the Illini will also battle at noon Saturday in Champaign, Ill. The Hoosiers then travel to West Lafayette to take on rival Purdue (29-15, 0-6) in a doubleheader starting at noon Sunday.
