2 Miami-Ohio coaches suspended

OXFORD, Ohio -- Two Miami University assistant football coaches were suspended Wednesday after one was charged with assaulting a fan and another acknowledged damaging a coaches' box at Marshall. Coach Terry Hoeppner apologized Wednesday, saying things got out of control when fans rushed the field following Marshall's last-second 36-34 win over its Mid-American Conference rival.

Assistant coach hired for 2003

Men's tennis coach Ken Hydinger announced the hiring of new assistant coach Matthew Pledger on Monday. "Matthew (Pledger) will bring a wide variety of things to our program," Hydinger said. "He has played professionally and he knows what the next level is like. He'll have high expectations."

Senior returning for fifth year

Senior Karie Schlukebir announced this past week that she is coming back next year as a fifth-year senior. Schlukebir was sidelined early in both her freshman and sophomore years because of cancer, but overcame it to become successful on the court.

Sophomore returns to field after serious injury

When sophomore midfielder Danny O'Rourke went down in warm-ups prior to the IU men's soccer game with Northwestern on Oct. 13 it was the first serious injury a Hoosier had suffered this season. IU responded by winning five of their six games without O'Rourke, a starting defensive-minded midfielder, and went on to clinch the regular season Big Ten Championship.

Mavs remain perfect

CLEVELAND -- The Dallas Mavericks are still perfect. Dirk Nowitzki scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Dallas remained the NBA's only unbeaten team, improving to 8-0 with a 103-99 victory Wednesday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

First recruit signs

The IU men's basketball team penned its first recruit Wednesday. Jessan Gray-Ashley, 6-foot, 10-inch, 205-pound forward from Davenport, Iowa, signed a national letter of intent to play for the Hoosiers. He had considered Creighton, Alabama State and Indiana State.

Winning streaks collide at OSU

In a rare mid-week matchup, IU takes its three game winning streak into Columbus, Ohio Wednesday night to face an even hotter Ohio State squad, winners of five games in a row. IU (18-8, 8-6) will be trying to inch even closer to earning an NCAA tournament automatic bid for the first time since the 1999 season. The team's 8-6 Big Ten mark is the Hoosiers' best conference start since 1995 and a win Wednesday night would give them their second four game win streak in the past month.

Realignment right for NBA

Now that Charlotte all but has an NBA franchise again (the league has OKed the idea, and the city council has voted in favor of an arena being built), league commissioner David Stern is proposing the idea of realignment for the 2004-05 season. Stern wants to move to a format that would divide each conference into three divisions of five, rather than the current two divisions of seven (eight in the Central). It's a great idea, but there are some hurdles that the league will have to overcome to get there.

Jones back at help against PSU

Senior quarterback Tommy Jones was named the starter for Saturday's game against No. 16 Penn State. Jones will replace senior Gibran Hamdan who had started the previous eight games. Jones entered the season as the starter but was hurt in the Utah game of the year. Hamdan played against Kentucky the following week while Jones was sidelined. Hamdan was named the permanent starter on Sept. 17. Jones has had two appearances in the past three weeks, one against Illinois on Oct. 26, and the other this past weekend against Michigan State.

Losing streak snapped

Winning record stays afloat against Wildcats

The IU men's swimming and diving team remains undefeated with a 4-0 record after pulling out an upset over the No. 20 Northwestern Wildcats Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Third season shows improvement

As the clock struck midnight on the IU field hockey team's season Friday, a casual observer would look at the Hoosiers 6-13 overall record as unimpressive. But in only its third year, coach Amy Robertson's team has shown vast improvement over her two previous clubs.

Hoosiers 'Premier' with win

Coach Steve Rainer of Premier Sports said he's satisfied with the competitive game his team played against the IU women's basketball team Friday night. The Hoosiers came out on top in the exhibition game, 70-65.

IU sweeps weekend

The sixes were wild coming into this weekend for the Hoosier volleyball team, floating on a 6-6 Big Ten record and running sixth place in the conference. The team said they could turn the tide with a pair of matches against the 25th ranked Michigan State Spartans Friday and the Michigan Wolverines Saturday.

Michigan State walks over Hoosiers

The Hoosiers lost the Brass Spittoon and any possibility of a post-season bowl game after Michigan State walked all over them Saturday 56-21. The Spartans put up 35 points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach early.
