Dominant performance downs rival

·

The IU women's swimming and diving teams won both bragging rights and an important conference dual meet with a 198-102 win over Purdue. No. 14 IU took first in 13 of 16 events to bolster the victory over the No. 17 Boilermakers. "Overall, we are very pleased with our afternoon," coach Dorsey Tierney said. "Our depth was a major factor. We swam well and Purdue didn't swim as well as they are capable. They certainly bring out the best in us and today that showed. We have a tough group."

Freshman nearly repeats career high

·

ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- Freshmen guards don't usually bring intangibles like this, but this is no ordinary freshman. Freshman guard Cyndi Valentin has been as solid as a rock this year, and it was no different on Sunday in IU's gut-wrenching loss to Michigan 71-68.

It looks like the perfect Super Bowl matchup: Oakland's high-powered offense against Tampa Bay's stingy defense. John Lucas couldn't make winners out of the Cleveland Cavaliers, so Keith Smart is getting a shot. He's made a big one before. The women's track and field team defeated Kent State and Michigan State but lost to host Michigan in their indoor season opener on Saturday.

It's been a long time since Purdue beat IU on the ice. So long, in fact, that nobody seems to remember. "I'm not sure how long it's been," IU coach Rich Holdeman said. "They haven't won in the ten years I've been here." IU General Manager Adam Schuchman, who holds the archive records for IU hockey, doesn't know either.
