Funny Cide fails in Triple try, Empire Maker takes Belmont

NEW YORK -- The magical ride ended in the mud, splashed aside by a rival who wasn't about to let a gelded nobody become part of racing royalty. Empire Maker caught Funny Cide on the far turn and won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, thwarting yet another Triple Crown hopeful's attempt to do what no horse has managed since Affirmed in 1978.

IU raises ticket prices

The IU Athletics Department has decided to raise non-student ticket prices for football games to offset financial troubles that have plagued the department since the departure of former athletics director Michael McNeely in November of 2002. Last year, the athletics department had a $3.2 million debt, and the IU athletics ticket manager Mike Roberts told The Associated Press the price changes are to combat this deficit.

Hoosier junior to play in LPGA tournament

In the wake of Annika Sorenstam's attempts to revolutionize the women's golf game at the Memorial, IU might see the rise of another golfer who could leave her mark on the LPGA Circuit as early as next week. Coming off the most successful year of her college career, junior Karen Dennison has accepted a sponsor's exemption to partake in the 2003 Giant Eagle LPGA Classic on June 9-15, at the Squaw Creek Country Club in Vienna, Ohio. She will now get a small taste of what it feels like to play on the professional tour, alongside greats such as Sorenstam, Dorothy Delasin and Beth Daniel. Dennison has been very excited all month, working consistently with coach Sam Carmichael to improve her overall game in an attempt to be as competitive as possible come tournament time. Prior to the 2003 season, Carmichael was happy with her ability to better herself as a player, and with a LPGA Tour bid, it seems that her will for improvement has paid off.

Juniors earn trip to track nationals

Prior to leaving for the NCAA Regional meet at Ohio State University last weekend, few gave juniors Pat Miller and Tom Burns more than an outside shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento. Good thing predictions are useless. Instead, both ended up with bids to the final collegiate meet, where they will vie for All-America status.

A perplexing question to answer is does football promote violence in teenagers and adults who regularly watch NFL games? A recent study by IU researchers says when it comes to cases of domestic violence, football does not encourage as much of it as once thought.

Foreign drivers, motors dominate race

When the Indy Racing League originally was founded in 1996 by Tony George, its main goal was to counter NASCAR's growing dominance through the use of more home-grown American drivers. However, it now seems the "American way" has been lost at the Indianapolis 500. In fact, if this year's Indianapolis 500 results can be used as a gauge, it seems that the IRL was founded to showcase Brazilian drivers rather than their American counterparts. Gil de Ferran, the soft-spoken Penske driver, took this year's race, followed closely by the more flamboyant 2001 and 2002 winner Helio Castroneves, and third place went to Tony Kanaan -- all Brazilian drivers.

Two water polo players named All-American After reaching the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament, two Hoosiers from the water polo team -- senior Kristin Stanford and sophomore Krista Peterson -- were named as All-Americans by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. Stanford managed to make the second-team squad, while Peterson was named as an honorable mention.

Nittany Lions end Hoosier season

The Hoosier baseball season came to a close Friday afternoon at the hands of the Penn State Nittany Lions. IU was beaten 8-4 by Penn State to end their season with a 34-22 record. The Nittany Lions moved on to win against Michigan in Saturday's first game before losing to Ohio State in the second game.

2003 Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS -- While inexperience showed at times for rookie drivers in the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500, nerves did not, as the majority of rookies not only finished the race, but did so in remarkable fashion. Six of the nine rookies finished in the top 15 of the Indy 500 Sunday. Tora Takagi, driver of the No. 12 Pioneer car, finished fifth and was the highest-placing rookie. Takagi described his success at the Brickyard and the privilege of leading the rookie field. "I am very happy with this result in my first Indy 500 race," Takagi said. "My car was always fast this month. I wish I could have finished about two places higher, because I think we were capable of finishing at least third. But overall, I am happy with being the highest-finishing rookie in the race. That is a great honor."
