Freitag faces familiarity in weekend tournament

Saint Louis University was IU head soccer coach Mike Freitag's team growing up in the gateway to the West. His father Charles would take Mike to all of the Billikens home soccer games. The current Hoosier coach would often go back to his neighborhood playground and imitate the players on Harry Keough's legendary teams -- winners of five NCAA titles.

In four years as assistant athletic director for game management at IU, Kit Klingelhoffer has witnessed a police officer assaulted with a beer bottle, a large fight that partially closed down 17th Street and numerous arrests for anything from disorderly conduct to public urination. All took place in the parking lot.

Heart disease blamed in death

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion had heart disease and showed evidence of previous heart trouble when he collapsed and died after a preseason game last month, an official in the Denver County coroner's office said Tuesday.

Club team finally coming full swing

Junior Matt Ostrega's vision of an IU club baseball team, and ten months of hard work creating one, will come to fruition Tuesday. Club baseball, for the most part, is similar to that of IU's varsity baseball team. Like college ball, the team carries 25 to 30 players on its traveling roster, plays other college clubs and is open to all full-time students.

Club offers runners forum to compete

Running alone last year was no fun for senior Ben Bartley. He was discouraged because although IU has well-respected and experienced track and cross-country teams, there was no organization for students who wanted to run for fun. Some students who wanted to learn proper training techniques of running and to have a forum to compete had nowhere to turn. Bartley and junior Jacqui Davis decided to do something about it.

Team attracts riders with animals

At a time when many mainstream sports like basketball, soccer, or even cult sports like Ultimate Frisbee receive recognition within IU's recreational and club sports community, a sport commonly seen in the Olympics and on late-night ESPN has begun its quest to expand on campus.

Hurricane washes out the Green Wave

DALLAS - Tulane athletic teams displaced from their New Orleans campus by Hurricane Katrina will be based this fall at five different universities. The Green Wave student-athletes will live and attend classes at schools in Texas and Louisiana. The teams will stay together and play under the Tulane banner.

Kilrew named IU Scholar-Athlete of the week

Porter grabs 2 picks in 41-10 win

Sept. 6, 2004 Similar to this past weekend, the IU football and men's soccer teams each start off their seasons in grand fashion. Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter leads the football team to a 41-10 win with two interceptions, including one he returned for a 96-yard touchdown. On the soccer field, junior midfielder Brian Plotkin plays an integral offensive role as IU wins both of its weekend matches.

Media, fans, staff adjust to injury release changes

Last week, a car struck junior water polo defender Emily Schmitt, leaving her hospitalized. Bloomington Police reports stated Schmitt suffered a fractured spine, but once the season opener rolls around, more details will be hard to come by.

Pannozzo nets Big Ten award; team gets transfer

It didn't take long for senior linebacker John Pannozzo to accommodate himself to a new position. The Hoosiers' middle linebacker was named Big Ten defensive player of the week after his performance against Central Michigan Saturday. Last season, Pannozzo started at fullback for the Hoosiers; however, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner was so impressed with the linebacker's special teams play that he decided to move him to linebacker.

Agassi hangs tough in 5-setter to meet Blake in quarterfinals

NEW YORK -- Three points from the end of a sunbaked five-setter, the man draped over the net like a wet noodle was 10 years younger than Andre Agassi. Maybe to rub it in, maybe because Agassi felt rejuvenated, he hopped on his toes as Xavier Malisse, gasping and all but gone, peeled himself off the net and returned for the final moments of punishment.

Jerry Rice retires from football after 20 seasons

DENVER -- Unwilling to be a bit player with the Broncos, Jerry Rice retired Monday, closing a 20-year career for the most productive receiver in NFL history. Rice, 42, made his decision during the weekend at home in San Francisco, then returned to Broncos headquarters and met with coach Mike Shanahan.

IU's Indianapolis connection

They've played soccer together on the same team since sixth grade and have already made history in the first match of the 2005 IU men's soccer season. Friday, the sophomore trio of goalkeeper Chris Munroe, and defenders Greg Stevning and Charley Traylor became the first group of teammates from the same high school graduating class to start and play in a match for the IU men's soccer team. Stevning and Traylor went to middle school together and still live together off-campus, with Munroe living just down the street. When the trio were seniors at North Central High School in Indianapolis, they won the 2002 Indiana High School State Soccer Championship. As the group stepped onto the field against Wake Forest University, their three-year journey from the high school's varsity squad to the Indiana Olympic Development Program and through the Dynamo Futbol Club team finally culminated.
