After flu, Davis returns to sidelines

For about a week, some fans might have been searching for Mike Davis. He didn't coach Saturday against Iowa because of a flu-like illness. His practices have been uncharacteristically closed to the media. And he left assistants Kerry Rupp and Donnie Marsh to do his radio show Monday night.

Leveling the playing field

"Women need not apply." It was those four words that convinced former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh to change America. They say behind every powerful man is a great woman and Bayh, an IU School of Law alumnus and Indiana native, knows this to be true. His wife, Marvella, had been like his campaign manager. Marvella, the daughter of a wheat farmer, already had a list of achievements when she met Birch in December of 1951. In Oklahoma, she was a straight "A" student, the first female president of her student body, governor of Oklahoma Girls' State, president of Girls' Nation and had met President Truman. "It was love at first sight," said Bayh, now 78.

Davis criticizes detractors

As Hoosier coach Mike Davis continues to try to fulfill his job description and coach basketball, he finds himself continually answering questions about his job -- not his team. For the second day in a row, Davis' comments made national headlines as he addressed the media during a Big Ten teleconference. "It doesn't make any sense," he said. "I've been under fire for the past weeks by not just the fans, but the media. And we were one game out of first place during that time. We were ranked in the top 20 during that time." Davis compared recent circumstances to Orlando Magic star Steve Francis under achieving amid trade rumors, or a family being nervous about a company downsizing.

Bush honors White Sox as Series champs

WASHINGTON -- With much of the team absent and its colorful and quotable manager on a family vacation, the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox paid a visit Monday to the White House to be honored by President George W. Bush. Bush, a former co-owner of the Texas Rangers, showered the team with praise, thanked Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf for helping him get into baseball ownership years ago and saluted manager Ozzie Guillen for his skill and becoming a U.S. citizen.

Athletics department funds $1.5 million facility

Following its most successful season in school history, the IU field hockey team will be rewarded with a "state of the art" outdoor facility set to open this fall. On Feb. 3, the IU board of trustees approved a $1.5 million plan to build a field hockey field with a synthetic playing surface and an adjacent soccer practice field with a natural grass surface. The fields will be located between the IU outdoor swimming pool and St. Paul's Catholic Center. The plan includes fencing, a scoreboard, safety nets and an irrigation and drainage system for the soccer field.

IU drops 4th straight meet

The first seven times the IU wrestling team faced Penn State, it came out on the losing end. Number eight didn't turn out to be the lucky number for the No. 15-ranked Hoosiers, who dropped their fourth straight match Friday with a 27-8 loss to the No. 8-ranked Nittany Lions.

Hoosiers win 3 of 3 in successful weekend at home

Eager to wrap up an action-packed weekend, the No. 31 IU women's tennis team swept Butler University 7-0, clearing the Indiana Tennis Center courts in two hours. The Hoosiers accumulated a 3-0 record for the weekend with a 7-0 victory over Marquette University on Saturday and two wins Sunday, the first over DePaul University 6-1.

IU stuggles to adapt with new doubles combos

The No. 60 IU men's tennis team came up short this weekend in an effort to extend its unbeaten spring season. The Hoosiers were upended by No. 32 Louisville in Kentucky 6-1 on Friday, followed by a 5-3 defeat of the cream and crimson by No. 39 Middle Tennessee State the subsequent day.

Losing woes extend for Hoosiers in San Diego

Hoosiers record top times, top-10 finishes at Tyson

The IU women's track team seemed to ride the momentum of its season-opening home stand to have many athletes place well at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend. "When you compete with the best schools in the country, you want to compete well," said associate head coach and sprints coach Ed Beathea. "I think the meet served its purpose to prepare us for conference."

Neville paces IU as Hoosiers showcase talent in Arkansas

The IU men's track and field team traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete against some of the nation's premier programs at the annual Tyson Invitational. Unhampered by the sluggishness that often accompanies traveling for meets, the men's squad posted six top-10 finishes at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Davis: Critics' negativity plagues team

Life's troubles can be notorious for their peculiar timing. The day after rumors began surfacing about IU coach Mike Davis resigning, he was mysteriously absent from pregame introductions.
