IU volleyball looks to open Big Ten season strong over the weekend with matches at Iowa, No. 12 Minnesota

The IU volleyball team spent the first part of their season testing themselves against some of the best competition they could find, playing in a total of four preseason tournaments. Now they get to start over, as it is time for Big Ten play.

Hoosiers go on ‘discovery trip,’ open fall season at Wake Forest tourney

After about a week of practices, the IU women’s tennis team is gearing up for its first fall tournament, the Wake Forest Invitational, which will take place this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. While this tournament will not determine team rankings, it will eventually influence individual rankings at the end of the season. More importantly, it will allow coaches to get a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of this year’s Hoosier squad, which features four freshmen. “It’s a get-your-feet-wet tournament,” IU coach Lin Loring said.

IU comes from behind again to earn 5th victory

The IU women’s soccer team had to come from behind for the fourth time this season to overcome the Butler Bulldogs 2-1. Butler scored first as midfielder Courtney Lord soared a shot from 30 yards out that went over a mis-timed jump of Hoosier freshman goalkeeper Lauren Hollandsworth in the 19th minute. That goal would be Butler’s only score. Indiana’s first goal came on the board in the 63rd minute as sophomore midfielder Christie Kotynski headed in a shot to the back post, off of a cross from sophomore defender Kelly Lawrence. “We were ready to play again,” Kotynski said. “At halftime we came out ready to play, and (we) stepped up and won the game.”

C. C. Sabathia picks up 18th win as Indians beat Tigers 4-2

C.C. Sabathia upgraded his Cy Young resume and Cleveland finished declawing the Detroit Tigers with a 4-2 win Wednesday that completed a three-game sweep and reduced the Indians’ magic number for clinching the AL Central to three.

IU ticket prices rise

Much to the chagrin of senior Hunter Marks, he will have to pay more to get season tickets for the IU men’s basketball team this year. The Los Angeles native has become a Hoosier basketball fan during his first three years in Bloomington, so he will pay the extra $53 for the ticket package.

IU men's golf finishes fourth in Gopher Invitational

The IU men’s golf team stroked its way to a fourth place tie in the 12-team Gopher Invitational last weekend in Wayzata, Minn. The tournament was hosted by the University of Minnesota and held at the par 72, 7,020-yard Spring Hill Golf Club.

Sophomore quarterback Kellen Lewis said he simply took what Akron gave him. The Zips were generous. In the first quarter, Lewis took off for a career-best 64-yard run on a quarterback option – and he was just getting started. The run was a microcosm of the game, as Lewis ran 18 times for 199 yards and two touchdowns in the Hoosiers’ 41-24 victory over Akron.

No. 2 Hoosiers lose twice at Saint Louis invite

This weekend, the IU men’s soccer team hit a speed bump in it’s journey toward another national championship. The team traveled to St. Louis to compete in the Saint Louis/Nike Soccer Classic, where it was dealt two tough, 2-1 losses. These were the first losses of the season for IU.

Men finish 2nd, women 3rd at Indiana Intercollegiates

Sophomore Jordan Kyle said before Friday’s Indiana Intercollegiates in West Lafayette that he needed to run his own race to do well in the meet. Mission accomplished for Kyle, who won his second straight race to open the season with a time of 24 minutes and 39 seconds.
