Zeller not coming to IU

After months of speculation, IU recruiting target Tyler Zeller has made the decision to play college basketball at the University of North Carolina. Zeller announced his decision Monday at a press conference in his hometown of Washington, Ind. Zeller, a 6-foot-11 center, is ranked No. 22 in the nation for the 2008 recruiting class, according to recruiting service www.rivals.com. UNC coach Roy Williams adds another five-star prospect to his team, beating out IU, Purdue and Notre Dame. “North Carolina was the best fit for me,” Zeller told www.CarolinaBlue.com, part of the Rivals recruiting network.

IU drop meets to No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Michigan

The IU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams don’t like losing, but they feel they have plenty of positives to take out of their respective defeats to Michigan and Texas last weekend. “We wanted to show our guys what top five teams are,” said IU coach Ray Looze. “We saw it and have a better idea of what we have to do.”

IU completes final fall tournament

Competing in the Western Michigan Duals, their last tournament of the fall, the Hoosiers took advantage of the chance to improve their game before the spring season starts in January. The team ended the short fall season optimistic about the spring. Junior Alba Berdala advanced to the finals of her flight Sunday, but lost to Kerstin Pahl of Western Michigan. Pahl also defeated freshman Charlotte Martin before playing Berdala.

Exhibition season ends with visit from down under

The IU women’s basketball team rounds out its short exhibition season tonight at 7 p.m. at Assembly Hall with a game against the Showtime Skins, an Australian touring team. IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack acknowledged that she has a young team this year, but she said she will be looking for improvement against the Skins.

Hoosiers drop away matches vs. No. 1 Penn State, Ohio State

The IU volleyball team (14-12, 5-9) suffered through two road losses this weekend, one against Ohio State and the other at the hands of No. 1 Penn State. Ohio State, a team the Hoosiers defeated earlier in the season in Bloomington, beat IU on Friday in four games (30-26, 30-25, 23-30, 33-31). The Hoosiers were then bested Saturday by the nation’s top team, Penn State, who took the match in three games (30-14, 30-18, 30-23).

IU womens basketball opens season with exhibition win

The IU women’s basketball team began the first exhibition game of the new season on a 17-0 run and never looked back, defeating the Hoosier Lady Stars 77-49 Saturday night at Assembly Hall. The visitors didn’t score until five minutes into the game.

Lewis overcomes early turnovers, leads IU to victory, bowl eligibility

After six failed attempts over the last two years, the IU football team is bowl eligible. As is typical with Hoosier victories, sophomore quarterback Kellen Lewis had a big day statistically. But after the game, Lewis was deflecting the credit to two leaders who kept him in the game mentally.

Last Defense

Much has changed in the last three years of IU field hockey. Games have moved from Mellencamp Pavilion to the new IU Field Hockey Field, players have come and gone and lineups have been altered. But if one thing has remained constant, it has been the presence of senior goalkeeper Haley Exner in net. Exner, who has started all but one game over the last three years and earned All-Big Ten honors the past two seasons, will make her final home start Sunday when IU (7-9, 0-5) plays Northwestern on Senior Day. During her career, Exner played a crucial role in the growth of Hoosier field hockey, and her skill and leadership in goal have made her the face of a young program now established as a national power.

Kellen Lewis recalls 1st game
