Making something out of not much

·

It's no surprise that early Cul de Sac shows were performed subsequently with experimental films. Sounding nothing like the early '90s rock moment they came out of, the nearly always vocal-less group feels like an experiment in itself.

'25th Hour' hits home

·

Spike Lee's latest joint, "25th Hour," went relatively ignored upon release, which is sad, as it's an amazing film that easily exceeds "Do the Right Thing" (his previous best).

Growing up looking for 'The Real Girls'

·

Trust is very important for those living in a small town and trying to have relationships. After all, there are fewer people. You never know when or where you might run into an ex. That can cause discomfort, especially when hearts get broken.

'In-Laws' should seek immediate annulment

·

The In-Laws" is Michael Douglas' second attempt this year at a movie about dads coming to terms with fatherhood following the deplorable "It Runs in the Family." While "Family" was exceedingly slow and overly serious, "The In-Laws" approaches the topic in a much sillier and unbelievable form.

Price-fixing investigation at IUPUI

·

IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis is refunding an estimated $500,000 to current and previous students who were enrolled in classes between July 2001 and December 2002. In November 2002, a routine internal audit revealed possible price-fixing activity at two IUPUI bookstore locations, which means two or more businesses agree to set a certain price in a particular market, thereby destroying competition and restricting the market from dictating price. Since IUPUI bookstores are owned and operated by the university, the school is offering refunds to its students. IUPUI students who were enrolled during the 18-month time period can visit a Web site where claims are calculated.

A well-deserved retirement

·

More than 30 years of dedication to anything is impressive. Helping to create and sustain what was once a controversial department while maintaining impeccable standards of scholarship over those same 34 years is truly remarkable.

Controversial reports taken

The IU Police Department said they will not pursue any suspects after about 500 copies of a report concerning the IU School of Law's affirmative action policies were taken from student mailboxes. IUPD said Scott Dillon, who graduated this month, reported that he assembled and placed the 12-page information packets in the law students' in-house mailboxes during the morning of May 6. According to the report, Dillon said the information was taken from the mailboxes later that night or early the next morning.

Recently, IU law student Scott Dillon requested the LSAT scores of applicants through Indiana's open-records laws as they corresponded to race and acceptance into the IU School of Law.

2003 Indy 500

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- While inexperience showed at times for rookie drivers in the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500, nerves did not, as the majority of rookies not only finished the race, but did so in remarkable fashion. Six of the nine rookies finished in the top 15 of the Indy 500 Sunday. Tora Takagi, driver of the No. 12 Pioneer car, finished fifth and was the highest-placing rookie. Takagi described his success at the Brickyard and the privilege of leading the rookie field. "I am very happy with this result in my first Indy 500 race," Takagi said. "My car was always fast this month. I wish I could have finished about two places higher, because I think we were capable of finishing at least third. But overall, I am happy with being the highest-finishing rookie in the race. That is a great honor."

A new spin on barbecue

·

Certain things come to mind when I think of summer. A mental image of long, hazy days, filled with baseball and lemonade. On the same note, some foods are ubiquitous with the season -- especially barbecue.
