The battle against apathy

During the past three weeks, fliers, posters, Indiana Daily Student articles, root beer bongs and noisemakers have hammered IU students with the same four letters: "IUSA." Parties competing for this year's election have mobilized scores of campaigners to spread the word of Big Red, Crimson, Fusion and Hoosier Party.

Hoosiers struggle at Central District Classic

The IU women's golf team started off its spring season at the Central District Classic in Parrish, Fla., against a highly competitive field. Ten of the 15 teams in the field, including the No. 39 ranked Hoosiers, were in the Golfweek Top 50.

Peterson wins gold on junior national team

Returning for her third season, junior Krista Peterson has had a big impact early on for the Hoosiers. She has helped the squad jump out to a 5-2 record, all of which has come against top 20 teams in the nation.

Kerry hits back at Bush as 'walking contradiction'

Democratic front-runner John Kerry fired back at President Bush on Tuesday, depicting him as a "walking contradiction" who has presided over job losses, a deficit increase and frayed international alliances despite promises to the contrary.

With regular season over, IU looks to reload

The end of the regular season marks a transition period for the IU wrestling team. With Sunday's 19-14 loss to Michigan State, the team finished the regular season on a five-match losing streak but looks forward to the win-or-go-home Big Ten Tournament that awaits.

One last road win can begin to save season

The Northwestern Athletics Web site has put out a "fan advisory" for tonight's game at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. It's one of their most popular games of the season, and if things go the Wildcats' way like they did last year, they will pick up another home win, this one against IU.

Dream a little dream

Sunday night, ESPN revealed its own version of "American Idol" in the form of a competition to be the next "SportsCenter" anchor. After advertising it for what seemed like every single commercial, the show "Dream Job" aired, as 12 hopeful contestants tried out for their life-long dream job.

Earthquake strikes Moroccan villages

RABAT, Morocco -- A powerful earthquake struck northern Morocco early Tuesday, toppling mudbrick and stone houses and killing at least 300 people, the Red Cross said. Many of the victims were women, children and the elderly.

Swim meet back after 7-year break

After a seven year hiatus, intramural swimming returns to competition Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Anyone may attend the swim meet, which begins at 5:30 p.m. At least 50 students are expected to compete in a variety of individual and relay events. This will be the first intramural swim meet since 1997.

Doctors or dropouts

Three years ago, Ali Navid packed up and made the days-long trip southeast from North Dakota to Bloomington. Working the graveyard shift in his father's Los Angeles video store and manning the cash register at gas stations led the University of Maryland graduate to think there had to be something better for him elsewhere.

Hoop'n Hoosiers Tournament canceled

Citing the lack of participants registered, the Student Recreational Sports Association has decided to cancel the Hoop'n Hoosiers basketball tournament. The SRSA hoped for about 28 teams to register, but failed to reach this goal.

Three-peat can't be beat

The Bulls did it twice in the 90s, and more recently, IU junior Alex Zamudio pulled off the feat. Zamudio attained the highly coveted three-peat by winning this month's intramural racquetball championship for the third straight year. Zamudio defeated doubles racquetball champion senior Dan Moore in the finals.

Wartime love story crosses borders

The sixth longest-running show in Broadway history, "Miss Saigon," will be playing at the IU Auditorium throughout this week. Written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, who composed "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon" is one of the few theatrical musicals that tells a story in a modern setting -- in this case, the Vietnam War. It gives a perspective of the war and the life of the soldiers not often seen in America.

Michael Jackson removed from lawsuit

INDIANAPOLIS -- A federal judge has removed Michael Jackson from a copyright infringement lawsuit, ruling that the Indiana-born entertainer had no involvement in a disputed 1996 compilation of songs the Jackson 5 performed decades ago.

Gun owner immunity bill passes

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would give civil immunity to gun owners whose weapons are stolen and later used in a crime. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Robert Meeks, said he is trying to protect responsible gun owners. He said people whose stolen firearms are used in crimes should not have to pay for legal fees to defend themselves against frivolous lawsuits.

Contra dancing group has been swinging for years

Professor captures musical spirits of Beethoven, Schubert

An unusually large and variegated audience gathered in Auer Hall Monday evening for a recital. All were there to hear Edmund Battersby's performance. Battersby is a professor of piano at the IU School of Music and an internationally recognized virtuoso pianist. In store for Monday night's audience was a large and very diverse selection of solo piano music occupying a good one-and-a-half hours of listening.

Shakespeare opens at Buskirk-Chumley

The Acting Company, an award-winning acting troupe, will present Shakespeare's "Richard III" at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The Acting Company's appearance is part of "Shakespeare in American Communities," the largest tour of Shakespeare in American history, according to www.shakespeareinamericancommunities.org.
