TOKYO -- Vice President Dick Cheney was pledging U.S. support to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in pressing ahead with plans to double Japan's noncombat forces in Iraq despite the furor over the abduction of three citizens, U.S. officials said Sunday.

IU outlasts two ranked opponents

Coming into the weekend's matches, the Hoosiers were hoping to come away with two victories going into their final homestand next weekend. IU did just that by beating No. 55 Michigan State 6-1 Friday and outlasting No. 50 Michigan 4-3, in the process getting its 10th victory of the season.

The Hoosiers narrowly avoided being swept in their four-game series with Minnesota this weekend by defeating the Golden Gophers, 9-6, Sunday. Against just their second Big Ten opponent, the Hoosiers (19-12, 3-5 Big Ten) again had trouble swinging the bats in three of the four games.

Dominating performance secures win at home

The men's track team won its first home meet of the outdoor season, putting its talent on display over two days for the home crowd and high schools from across the state. IU finished 167.5 points ahead of second place Central Michigan.

Just before the final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay, IU coach Randy Heisler thought a team victory was in jeopardy. The relay squad responded, however, turning back Indiana State, Central Michigan and Southern Illinois with a regional qualifying mark of 3 minutes, 42.14 seconds, giving the Hoosiers a one point 182-181 victory over Central Michigan.

Let's talk about balloons for a second. At first glance, there's really not that much to them. Sure, they're colorful. Sure, they can fly. Sure, they can make you sound like a chipmunk if you inhale their helium (which, by the way, is absolutely not funny). Does all this equal, in the mind of the artist, a deep and personal means of self-expression? Balloons just sort of exist; they are almost ubiquitous in every sort of gathering that somehow involves a lot of kids in one place.

In its April issue, Details Magazine has a feature titled "Gay or Asian?" which points out physical and fashion similarities between stereotypical Asian and gay men. The author describes the T-shirt a model is wearing in the picture: "V-neck nicely showcases sashimi-smooth chest. What other men visit salons to get, the Asian gene pool provides for free." She also points out his "Ladyboy Fingers" as "soft and long. Perfect for both waxing on and waxing off, plucking the koto or gripping the Kendo Stick."

Stabilizing Iraq is now reminding me of long car rides from my childhood. Even though the destination seemed wonderful, no matter how much time had passed and no matter how much terrain we had covered, it still felt like it took an eternity to get there. I fidgeted; buckled into the backseat I was uncomfortable. I wanted to know, are we almost there?

U.S. attack helicopter downed in Baghdad; 2 dead

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Gunmen shot down a U.S. attack helicopter near Baghdad, Iraq, Sunday, killing two crew members. A fragile cease-fire was held between Sunni insurgents and Marines in the city of Fallujah, Iraq, while the U.S. military suggested it is open to a negotiated solution in its showdown with a radical Shiite cleric in the south.

OSINNIKI, Russia -- The coal-blackened faces of exhausted rescuers and the red-rimmed eyes of anxious relatives told a grim story of disappearing hope Sunday, a day after a methane blast tore through a Siberian mine, killing at least 42 miners. Five miners remained missing in the latest disaster to strike Russia's hardscrabble coal country. "Most likely, they will all be corpses," said the head of a commission dealing with the disaster.

Help needed for kids festival

Festival fun April 18 Volunteers ages 15 and over are needed to help out at the Nur Festival. The event was founded by Naomi Komoda, a parent who was looking for venues where children could have a festival-type experience without the commercialism. At the festival, volunteers read to the children, help with games and craft projects, greet visitors and sell snacks.

Accident stalls traffic on highway 45/46

As students returned to town from Easter weekend, a three-car accident temporarily shut down Indiana Highway 45/46 Sunday evening. Numerous police cars, ambulances and rescue trucks arrived at the scene of a car flipped on its side. The highway was blocked off from near North Martha Street to Dunn Street.
