House fire kills 3 students

An off-campus house fire Saturday morning killed three IU students and left one student severely injured. Monroe County Coroner David Toumey said juniors Jacob Surface and Joseph Alexander, both 21, died Saturday in Bloomington. Sophomore Nicolas Habicht, 20, died Sunday afternoon following continued critical condition status while on life support at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

No rules broken in 'Breakin' All the Rules'

Titan Series ends with Purdue win

Despite a come-from-behind victory Friday to open its weekend series with arch-rival Purdue, IU lost both games in Saturday's doubleheader. Sunday' s season finale was canceled due to bad weather, preventing the Hoosiers from tying the weekend series, cementing the Boilers' Titan Series victory. Purdue picked up the baseball point to increase its lead in the annual head-to-head challenge between the two rival schools. The final score of this year's Titan Series ended with Purdue winning 11-9. The losses also gave arch-rival Purdue the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten tournament as the No. 6 seed. Senior pitcher Nick Vitielliss threw his second complete game of the season, as he allowed three unearned runs in the second inning off an error by freshman third baseman Josh Richardson.

Friends, family offer reflections of lives cut tragically short in fatal fire

Saturday morning brought tragedy to a group of IU students who did everything together. Jacob Surface, 21, and Joseph Alexander, 21 died Saturday and Nicolas Habicht, 20, died Sunday from a blaze which destroyed their off-campus home as they slept, said Monroe County Coroner David Toumey.

Cooling renovation leads to warmer buildings

Temperatures in campus buildings have been rising due to the renovation of IU's cooling system, said Mark Menefee, assistant director of utilities at the IU Physical Plant. The renovation process began in January and is expected to end in July with the replacement of two "chillers," which reduce the water temperature used in air conditioning systems.

Miller time once again

INDIANAPOLIS -- Reggie Miller did what Reggie Miller does. After missing his first six shots, Miller drilled a 3-pointer with 31.7 seconds left to break the game's final tie and lead Indiana past Detroit 78-74 Saturday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. "You knew it was coming," Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal said. "He's going to make one big-time shot, and he thrives on the biggest shot."

IU to eliminate 'add fee'

IU will no longer charge a $44 late program fee for adding and dropping courses after the first week of classes. It will only assess a $22 fee for each course dropped after the first week of classes. Last April, a new policy was announced introducing a $44 charge. But this month the University announced it would charge half that amount.

Fry up those cicadas

Early Music Festival performances continue

Performing songs from the Italian Renaissance, the Camerino Band will perform at 8 p.m. tonight at the Unitarian Universalist Church, featuring sopranos Elizabeth Ronan and Sonja Rasmussen, mezzo-soprano Angela Mariani, and lute-player Adam Wead. The band is just one of the groups performing at the Bloomington Early Music Festival, which continues through May 31 at venues throughout the city.

Kernan changes policies to allow more state contract opportunities

Gov. Joe Kernan announced Thursday he would make several policy changes to make it easier for companies to receive state contracts. The changes are part of Kernan's Opportunity Indiana initiative, which he created in November to change the way Indiana does business and increase opportunities for local companies.

Bloomington man found at bottom of Lake Monroe

The body of a Bloomington man was found at the bottom of Lake Monroe late Sunday afternoon. The 52-year-old victim apparently drowned. The victim's identity has not been released pending family notification and an autopsy. Indiana Conservation Officer Angela Goldman told The Indianapolis Star the victim had been swimming at Fairfax Beach with a female friend and her children at around 12:30 p.m. The man swam to buoys 25 feet from shore and did not return, Goldman said.

Goodbye Denmark!

It's so hard to believe that I am leaving Denmark in a matter of days. So much has changed since I arrived in the dreary month of January. When I moved into my yellow room in my host family's home in Humlebæk the days were short, the snow was deep and the environment unfamiliar.
