Saudi Arabia offers 1-month amnesty to Islamic militants

·

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi Arabia offered Islamic militants a limited amnesty Wednesday, saying their lives would be spared if they surrendered but they would face the "full might" of state wrath if they did not. The ultimatum, issued in the name of King Fahd, called on militants to turn themselves in within a month -- suggesting the kingdom was paving the way for a stepped up campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters who have shaken the country with a series of deadly attacks

Auburn transfer commits to Hoosiers

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marco Killingsworth needed a change. IU needed a rebounder. Tuesday, Killingsworth and the Hoosiers both got what they wanted. Killingsworth, Auburn's leading scorer last season, announced he would transfer to IU next year. "I look at it as a fresh start," Killingsworth said in a telephone interview. "I wanted to get a fresh new start. Now I am."

U.S. proposing aid in North Korea talks BEIJING -- U.S. negotiators presented the first detailed American proposal Wednesday on resolving the standoff with North Korea, offering the North energy aid and a security guarantee in exchange for dismantling its nuclear program. The proposal is meant to break an impasse in talks that began their third round after earlier negotiations brought no progress on Washington's demand for the North to scrap its nuclear program.

Bouncing through 'Ivan's' courtroom

·

Local resident Marta Jasicki's play, "Ivan the Terrible," which opened last weekend at the Bloomington Playwright's Project, is one of destruction and creation. Her broken scenes centering around a courtroom plot left me wondering what I just saw.

U.S. evaluates violence in Sudan

·

WASHINGTON -- Genocide has struck many victims over the past 65 years: European Jews during World War II, Cambodians in the late 1970s, Rwandans in 1994. There may be a new addition: The black African tribes of Darfur province in western Sudan have faced murder, displacement, pillage, razing of villages and other crimes committed by Arab militias known as janjaweed.

Wide variety of ethnic foods offered locally

·

Grub-hunting IU students may flock to the nearest pizza place, but the array of ethnic restaurants in Bloomington still flourishes. In fact, out of the 253 restaurants in Bloomington, nearly 100 are independently owned -- a high ratio considering the conservative eating habits of Midwesterners who usually prefer restaurant chains. Food lovers looking for meals from any ethnicity, from Indian to Greek, Irish to Mediterranean, Mexican to Thai, can find it in Bloomington.

Big Ben and the Tower of London

·

After I collected my bags at London Heathrow, a predicament emerged. I had with me the luggage from four months in Denmark, which is way too much to manage by myself in one trip. So I settled on leaving half of my belongings behind at the luggage desk, dropped the rest of my bags at my hostel and set out to find my flat.

Group vows to assassinate new Iraqi prime minister

·

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's interim prime minister said Wednesday he was determined to confront the mastermind of bombings and beheadings who threatened to assassinate him, and the U.S. military said it killed 20 foreign fighters at the suspected terrorist's hideout. A recording purportedly made by Jordanian-born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi threatened to kill interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi and fight the Americans "until Islamic rule is back on Earth."

CHICAGO -- Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said he is open to a possible Wrigley Field expansion project, but he said the Chicago Cubs and the community will have to work together before the plan can win city approval.

Draft starts flurry of offseason changes

·

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the 2004 NBA Draft, where losers will look to become winners and winners will wait as college-seasoned veterans fall in their lap. Tonight, many a hoops junky will sit in front of the television and watch for hours as their favorite team looks for the next star to save their franchise or provide the missing link in winning a title.

Kerry-Bush scorecard reflects wins for Kerry Perhaps if Jonathan Blanks had read some of John Kerry's proposals, he would properly recognize what Kerry represents rather than merely repeat the negative Republican mantra ("Is anyone for Kerry?" June 17).

Curb your attitude

·

I love people. OK, so I'm lying. In order to fully explain my reasons for getting agitated with people, let me define a simple word that is near abolishment around here -- Courtesy.

On 9-11, a Gilligan government

·

The minute-by-minute recount of the events that transpired on Sept. 11, 2001, was publicly presented last week by the 9-11 Commission in a 29-page report entitled "Improvising a Homeland Defense" -- much more aptly named, it turns out, than we had previously thought.

Oh (Big) brother

·

The idea of liberal indoctrination in university classrooms is not a new one to me. I am actually in the process of finishing a book by a fellow conservative, Ben Shapiro, on this very topic. But until recently, I never had experienced the phenomenon first-hand. The rhetoric spewed forth was not from the mouth of a professor or instructor, however, but from a group presentation discussing privacy issues in information technology -- no doubt the product of liberal teaching here at IU.

Web cruising summer

·

During the summer, I have to devise ways to amuse myself. I've read the requisite murder/romance/drama novels, reread the entire "Harry Potter" series and organized my limited collection of nail polish in descending order of size.

More than just a pretty face

·

Anyone who strolls through campus and passes by the dainty stream that is the Jordan River is haunted by IU's flawless beauty. Walking through campus is a speedy oasis between classes as we move from one plainly styled classroom to another. Unless people deliberately seek it, one might never see the character and beauty that compose the more historic academic buildings as well.

A new space era

·

These days it takes a lot for me to be inspired by a newspaper headline. I generally sit down with a paper and scowl at the pages as they go by. I can't believe that it's only mid-June and there is already a tiring barrage of news from the Bush-Kerry election trail. Even more dismaying is the media hype surrounding the release of Bill Clinton's autobiography, "My Life." I find it sad that these petty, pathetic talking heads are whom we are supposed to look to for hope, inspiration and leadership.
