'Superman' star dies at age 52

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve, who turned personal tragedy into a public crusade and from his wheelchair became the nation's most recognizable spokesman for spinal cord research, has died. He was 52.

SpaceShipOne crossed the finish line Oct. 5 winning the $10 million Ansari X-Prize and a 6-foot trophy with its second space shot in less than a week and in the process breaking a 41-year old altitude record on the 47th anniversary of the Soviet launch of Sputnik 1, the world's first satellite. Although now won, the X-Prize competition is only the beginning, space enthusiasts and investors maintain.

Catherine Johnson-Roehr works at the crossroads of two worlds. As art curator of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, her job is to maintain and provide access to the vast amount of "visual data" Kinsey collects and makes available for researchers. Johnson-Roehr said the Kinsey Institute is one of few institutes for sex research with an art collection and possibly the only one that publicly exhibits the work.

Volleyball drops 2 weekend matches The IU women's volleyball team extended its streak this weekend against the nationally ranked squads, Ohio State and Penn State. The streak, however, is not one the Hoosiers are proud of, as IU has lost nine consecutive matches.

Cardinals eliminate Los Angeles in 4 games

LOS ANGELES -- Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals sure looked like the best team in baseball. St. Louis advanced to the NL championship series for the third time in five years, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 Sunday night to win their first-round playoff 3-1.

Braves outlast Astros for comeback win

HOUSTON -- John Smoltz, Adam LaRoche and J.D. Drew saved the Atlanta Braves from another quick playoff exit. The Braves pounced on Houston's bullpen as soon as Roger Clemens was gone, rallying from a three-run deficit for a 6-5 victory Sunday that tied the best-of-five National League series at two games apiece.

Returning champs hope for repeat

Still searching for its first championship of the fall season, the IU men's golf team will look to defend last fall's first place finish at the Xavier Invitational when they tee off today in Loveland, Ohio. Last fall the Hoosiers won three of four tournaments, but the two-day tournament hosted by Xavier will be the first time IU will have the role of defending champions -- a role the team is looking forward to.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and Chicago Tribune editorial board member Clarence Page is scheduled to speak about the current ethical condition of the national media 8 p.m. tonight in the Indiana Memorial Union Whittenberger Auditorium. Page's lecture, entitled "Media Ethics is not an Oxymoron," caps off the 2004 Roy W. Howard National Reporting Competition day of celebration.

Washington U. students excited to host candidates

ST. LOUIS -- It was a busy week for Washington University students, but not because of an increased homework load. The national media descended from above: MSNBC and CNN set up stages in the campus' center quad. Security levels went through the roof, and students were asked to keep a student I.D. on-hand at all times to prove they actually needed to be on campus.
