Cheap shots at Republicans

I saw a Bush-Cheney bumper sticker while I was at the Kelley School of Business yesterday and I wanted to puke. Under this administration, record surpluses have turned into record deficits, Social Security hasn't been talked about since 2000, Iraq is in ferment, gas prices are climbing and will continue to according to OPEC's recent statements and U.S. credibility abroad is about as low as when the U.S.S.R. invaded Afghanistan during the Carter administration.

The tribulation of tickets

We paid for six tickets -- and then came the good news. We're getting 12 tickets instead. For the past three years, the package has been advertised as 12 tickets, but because of demand, we've been given six tickets and half of our money back. The problem is that, this year, everyone unexpectedly has to take the whole package.

Rosa Parks film explores race

·

The Black Film Center/Archives is presenting the story of civil rights activist Rosa Parks and the bus ride that ignited the Civil Rights movement. The film, directed by Julie Dash, explores the life of Parks and her effect on the country. The screening of the movie, "The Rosa Parks Story," will be held at 7 p.m. tonight in the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center in room A201.

Sharon: Nothing will deter Israeli pullout

JERUSALEM -- Facing unrelenting criticism from Jewish settlers, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Monday nothing would deter him from pushing forward with his plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank.

Basketball ticket pack expands to 12

Students will get to see all 12 men's basketball home games this season after all. The IU Athletic Ticket Office sent out an e-mail Saturday to students who purchased tickets alerting them that their season ticket package for men's basketball has been doubled to 12 games from the initial six.

For nine young men, Friday night was their introduction into the Hoosier mystique. Seven freshmen and two transfers donned the Crimson and Cream for the first time in front of the Hoosier faithful.

Webmail crash causes further delays

Ariel users who expected their Webmail systems to be up and running again Friday had to wait a little longer. University Information Technology Services originally scheduled the server to be fixed Friday; however, Ariel users didn't gain access to their accounts until Sunday at 1:45 p.m. Because of multiple failures on IMAP4, the mail storage server for Ariel, the system crashed Tuesday, leaving thousands of students at three IU campuses without access to their e-mail accounts.

The U.S. ambassador to Mongolia said she hopes the two nations can regard each other as "friendly neighbors" Friday at the annual Mongolia Society Conference.

The 2004 Big Man on Campus competition Saturday evening had three categories for contestants to score points, including a talent portion where several guys dedicated their musical renditions to Zeta Tau Alpha members, possibly to increase their scores.

Men's swim and dive beats Evansville The IU men's swimming and diving team felt they had something to prove after its close loss to Texas last week. Going into Friday's dual meet against the University of Evansville, IU Coach Ray Looze's team was ready to get its first 'W' in the win column.

Hoosiers finish 8th at Pre-NCAA's

Sophomore Jessica Gall and her teammates were looking to break their racing slump this past Saturday at the NCAA Pre-National meet. "We've had good workouts but we hadn't been running up to our potential," Gall said.

Team clinches berth in Big Ten tourney with draw

The IU women's soccer team wrapped up another tough weekend of Big Ten play Sunday after the Hoosiers suffered a 1-0 loss to Northwestern and drew with Illinois 1-1. IU lost its second consecutive conference game Friday afternoon when Northwestern scored in overtime to give the Wildcats a golden goal victory. Northwestern's Ashleigh Garmon scored off of a corner kick that sailed right into the IU penalty box with just three minutes left to play in the first overtime period.

Patriots hang on to beat Seahawks

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots got another victory -- but quite a scare -- as they extended their NFL record for consecutive wins. They stopped a late Seattle comeback to beat the Seahawks 30-20 Sunday, running their streak to 20 wins, including playoffs. They also tied the league record with their 17th consecutive regular-season victory.

Astros even series with new Killer B's

HOUSTON -- Julian Tavarez must have forgotten about Carlos Beltran when he said the Cardinals didn't think the Houston Astros were so special. Beltran struck again Sunday, homering in a record fifth straight postseason game and lifting the Astros over St. Louis 6-5 to even the NL championship series at 2.

IU's 5th place finish all but secures Nationals

The IU men's cross country squad entered its section of the weekend's Pre-National meet in Terre Haute in need of wins over quality teams, and also in need of another front-runner to join junior All-American Sean Jefferson, who finished fifth place overall.

Offseason gets Hoosiers in shape

Friday night's Midnight Madness festivities ended IU's nine-week preseason individual workouts. IU coach Mike Davis credited the program and summer workouts for noticeable improvements in the Hoosiers' physique coming into the 2004-05 season during Media Day, which preceded the event.
