Hot or not?

Before the technology gurus at IU pat themselves on the back, there are still some improvements to be made to our "hot" technology campus. In 2001, Time magazine named IU "College of the Year" among research institutions. In 2002, IU took home another ranking from The Princeton Review as the No. 1 party school.

Rankings, shmankings

IU's position in the recent college rankings reflects the good, the bad and the ugly. Though Newsweek ranked IU the Hottest Big State School, it also took a No. 1 position for beer consumption, as well as No. 6 party school by The Princeton Review. In the overall college rankings in U.S. News & World Report, IU fell from No. 71 last year to No. 74.

Tropical storm nearing Florida

MIAMI -- Tropical Storm Katrina threatened to dump more than a foot of rain on parts of water-logged Florida as it approached the state Wednesday, with forecasters expecting it to strengthen to a weak hurricane before hitting the coast.

Pentagon orders 1,500 troops to Iraq

Panel votes to keep 150 jobs at nearby Crane

The Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in southern Indiana would keep 152 jobs it had been expected to lose under a recommendation approved Wednesday by the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

Smoldering wires close Kirkwood

Purdue beefs up smoking policy

Barenboim and Beethoven, not bombs

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Conductor Daniel Barenboim brought together Israeli and Arab musicians for a concert that was as much about communication as it was about Beethoven and Mozart. Though Barenboim has often appeared in Ramallah, Sunday was the first time that his orchestra, whose 100 musicians come from Israel, Palestinian territories, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan, has performed here.

Diversity, food highlight CultureFest

After a day and a half of "being oriented," many freshman are ready for fun. And fun is what they will get at CultureFest at 4:30 p.m. today in the IU Auditorium and around Showalter Fountain. The event, for new and old students, will last into the evening. Office of Orientation Programs Graduate Assistant Emily McCallister said many current students call CultureFest the most memorable part of Welcome Week. The office is expecting thousands to attend.

Ah yes, another semester is about to begin, and IU has so much to brag about. Not only did we receive the title of "Hottest Big State School" by Newsweek, but we also received the No. 4 most fashionable school in the Women's Wear Daily Big Ten ranking. This is quite an accomplishment considering the first time IU was featured in the magazine, we received honorable mention. Making the top five sounds good to me, especially when you consider what we were up against.

Judge hears appeal for IU records

Monroe County Circuit Court proceedings began Wednesday morning in an ongoing lawsuit to force IU to release notes and records that led to the firing of former IU men's basketball coach Bob Knight.

Singing Hoosiers announce auditions for this year's season
