Every year, Marilyn Behrman can't help wondering if people will continue to come to the benefit event that honors the memory of her daughter, Jill. "I just keep thinking, 'Gosh, the students don't really know Jill. Are they really going to show up?'" she said. But every year, those worries evaporate as the Bloomington community answers, "Yes," in a huge way, refusing to let Jill's memory fade with time.

A sheep in a dog's collar at Eroticon

·

Standing in the pet supplies aisle of Target, I became conscious of a teenage boy staring at me as I held up a spiked dog collar to my neck. Yes, I was going to wear it."What would my father think?" ran through my head. David Nosko, a fellow Indiana Daily Student reporter, and I dressed in fetish garb Saturday night as we imbedded ourselves as guests at Axis' Eroticon event. Eroticon is a festival celebrating the Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadomasochist community.

Exploring the realms of sexual fantasies

·

When I observed a flier hailing the arrival of Eroticon at Axis Saturday night, I knew immediately what to do -- find a female reporter to escort me to cover the show. For the last two months I have attempted to explore the overall BDSM scene in person, online and within books, but somewhat to no avail. For those who lose themselves in acronyms, we are talking about "bondage & discipline," "dominance & submission" and "sadomasochism."

Veto blunders

·

Unbelievable. President George W. Bush has used the veto zero times in his presidency thus far. For five years, every single bill Congress has sent him has been signed into law. Despite the Republican Party's hollow rhetoric about how it stands for smaller government, there is no expansion of government, no bill, no new program that Bush has had the fortitude to reject.

Surf free or die

"We know what's best for you. Trust us." At the moment, the United Nations, the European Union and a coalition of countries, including such human rights champions as China, Cuba and Iran, are seeking to take control of the Internet -- history's greatest medium for free expression. Why? Because they know what's best for you -- and, really, you should trust them. Uh-huh ...

Shirt hypocrisy

·

Che Guevara. He's a hugely galvanizing figure; while some see him as an advocate for the everyman, others see him as a murderer. Regardless of their stance, to many, the mere mention of his name elicits strong emotional reactions.

American ideals up in flames

More than a week ago, two minors admitted to stealing a gay pride flag from Inner Chef, a local business, and burning it. The two minors claim they took the flag because it was "unpatriotic." But if the two 17-year-olds wanted to show support for American ideals last Saturday night, they missed the boat.
