Woman who faked cancer sentenced to 1 year in prison

A judge sentenced a woman to a year in prison for her second conviction on charges that she bilked money from people by faking she was ill from cancer. Brookelyn K. Walters, 26, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a felony theft charge. Monroe Circuit Judge Kenneth Todd gave her a three-year sentence Thursday but suspended two years of the term.

3 held in relation to arson incident

Three men face charges related to an October arson and burglary at Rally's Hamburgers, 550 S. Walnut St., that caused more than $100,000 in damages. An anonymous tip to Bloomington Police Department Detective Kevin Hill led the investigation to suspects Donald Ray Green, Lawrence Lee Krause and Robert Shawn Mobley. All three men were arrested, and each told police they were involved but denied they had set the fire.

Christmas cookies help missionaries, women's groups

Thanksgiving break is gone, and the Christmas season is now upon us, bringing good times with family and friends, a long break from classes and fun traditions unique to the season, including making Christmas cookies. Fun to bake, decorate and -- of course -- eat, these treats attracted many local guests to a local church Friday and Saturday.

'Csárdas' preserves folk tradition

On Friday evening, the Hungarian dance ensemble "Csárdas" displayed a passionate folk tradition and East European tango. Part of the Lotus Education and the Arts Foundation's mission to bring world music and culture to Bloomington, "Csárdas: The Tango of the East" also served as a celebration of Hungarian artistry and athleticism.

Judge: No Christ in state prayers

A federal judge banned using the name Jesus Christ in the regular prayers before the opening of the daily sessions of the Indiana House of Representatives in his ruling on a case brought against the House Speaker Brian Bosma by the Indiana Civil Liberties Union. Judge David Hamilton based his decision on the Supreme Court's 1983 ruling Marsh v. Chambers that says all prayers before a legislative body must be non-sectarian and not advance a specific religion.

A holiday for ALL

Sarah Bugden, a white junior, said she knew nothing about Kwanzaa and the African history surrounding it before she entered the Ruth N. Halls Theater Thursday night. Bugden and her friend Sherie Cooley, also a white junior, attended the pre-Kwanzaa festivities hoping to broaden their horizons and expand their knowledge of other cultures. "I was actually empowered by it," said Cooley. "People don't think about how much in common all these different cultures and people have."

IU receives $85M for scholarships

INDIANAPOLIS -- An anonymous donor endowed IU with $70 million, the largest scholarship gift ever given by an individual in the University's history, IU President Adam Herbert announced Thursday during a press conference at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis. In addition, Herbert also revealed the establishment of the $15 million Cox Scholars Program, named after IU alumnus and businessman Jesse Cox and his late wife, Beulah, who donated the money.

Hoosiers' Nguyen to turn pro

Last summer, Lee Nguyen played in Enschede, Holland, on the United States' under-20 national team in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championships. He was the only high schooler on the roster of college-age players. The IU freshman might now return to the site of his last international match to begin his professional career. "I talked with all of my teammates and they agreed with the time," said Nguyen, who recently signed with an agent. "Going pro is all about timing. I gotta pick the right time and I think this is it."

Globe commemorates World AIDS Day

People from all around the world gathered to commemorate World Aids Day Thursday. In Denmark, a church held a quilt show and in Ethiopia people had a candlelight procession in a refugee camp. In Bloomington, the sidewalk by the Sample Gates was lined with candles. The organizers said they wanted the event to raise awareness of the AIDS crisis in both the United States and the rest of the world, said Kathryn Mullen, co-director of IU Student Global AIDS campaign, one of the organizations that sponsored the event along with Kenya Development Volunteers and The Masters in Public Health Association.

IU prepares to face Wildcats

The No. 11 IU men's swimming and diving team faces off in a Big Ten battle against No. 17 Northwestern at 4 p.m. Friday in Evanston, Ill. The Hoosiers have not been in action for close to two weeks, but used the long Thanksgiving break to get ready for the Wildcats.

ESPN suspends Irvin for 1 week following arrest

DALLAS -- Michael Irvin says he has been suspended by ESPN for one week for not telling the network about his arrest last week, when police found a drug pipe hidden in his car during a traffic stop. Irvin, who has maintained that the pipe belonged to a friend, told The Associated Press Thursday that he won't return to the air until Dec. 11. He was arrested Friday in Plano, Texas, for an outstanding warrant on an unpaid speeding ticket but was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his car.

No. 15 Hoosiers head to Northwestern

The No. 15 IU women's swimming and diving team will head to Evanston, Ill., at 4 p.m. Friday to battle the Northwestern Wildcats in hopes of winning its final dual meet of the semester. The Hoosiers (4-2) will hit the road for the first time since beating Minnesota in enemy territory Oct. 29. Senior Lauren Torpey said the pairing of IU and Northwestern is an "unspoken rivalry" because Jimmy Tierney, Northwestern's head coach, is IU head coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker's brother.

Dungy says Colts aren't perfect

Hoosiers will rest regulars during weekend's Open

On Nov. 27, IU placed 13 wrestlers at the Mat Town Invitational. For the University of Northern Iowa Open this Sunday, the No. 16 Hoosiers already know they will not have as many grapplers place. That is because IU is using this weekend to rest up and will not be sending as many wrestlers to compete. IU coach Duane Goldman said the Hoosiers will not be sending any of their regular starters to the Open, but rather will send a few backups to represent the team.

Colts deny aiding crowd noise during Steelers game

PITTSBURGH -- The Indianapolis Colts deny they supplemented the already loud crowd noise in the RCA Dome during Monday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers by pumping heavy bass noise through the stadium's speakers.

Student by day, mayor by night

IU looks to return to transition game

It's not often that a coach goes back to the drawing board before a game against an opponent with a 1-2 record, but IU coach Mike Davis fully plans on it before Saturday night's home game against Eastern Michigan. After Wednesday's close loss to Duke, Davis felt his team played well with the exception of the first five minutes, but he expressed concerns about his squad abandoning its commitment to scoring in transition.

Reality of racism

Anyone that hasn't been living under a rock knows that racial comments are not right. Decent people simply do not make racial comments. Well, some people are racists and would beg to differ, but they are held in check by public behavior rules and political correctness. So I guess it would be more accurate to say decent people do not make racial comments in public -- unless provoked.
