Sophomore gunning for starting role

As the IU women's volleyball season winds down, competition for the six starting positions is sure to heat up. The Hoosiers head to the Great Lakes State this weekend to play Michigan and Michigan State, and IU coach Katie Weismiller is intent on expanding her repertoire of players. And lately, a dark horse has emerged to earn her share of court time. Sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Allison has contributed more than just kills to the Hoosier scoreboard. Her conditioning and fervid work ethic has recently had Allison flirting with the starting lineup.

A chance to change

That is funny is that I just scrapped an entire column of worthless optimism. I had paragraphs of propaganda comparing the Hoosiers to gladiators on their way to Ann Arbor Arena. It was colorful, full of descriptive adjectives, and it was a load of crap. What kind of chances do we have in Ann Arbor? About the same chances I have of hitting puberty ... again.

IU faces first half of must wins

Coach Terry Hoeppner said the Hoosiers have their "backs against the walls" after losing last weekend. IU will have to win its last two games of the season to become bowl eligible and end its four-game losing streak. As if that wasn't enough of a challenge, IU will be confined within the walls of the Big House this weekend. The Hoosiers will visit the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines Saturday -- a team they have lost 47 out of 56 games against in the series history.

IU to face Tar Heels in 1st round of NCAA tournament

For the IU field hockey team, the road to the Final Four begins in Winston-Salem, N.C., the site of its first-round matchup with No. 5 University of North Carolina. The Hoosiers and the Tar Heels square off at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Xavier Keeling becomes first 2006-07 recruit

IU head coach Mike Davis is doing his part to add a little cream to the crimson state of Alabama. The Alabama native added two players from his home state two years ago with sophomore D.J. White and senior-transfer Marco Killingsworth. Thursday, he stole another prospect from Alabama by officially signing 6-foot-6 forward Xavier Keeling.

Filling the paint

The absence of sophomore forward D.J. White left the Hoosiers with many questions, but senior forward Marco Killingsworth had all the answers in Thursday night's 96-49 home win over the University of Indianapolis. Killingsworth scored 16 of his 22 points in the paint, seeing limited action in the second half. Coach Mike Davis rested the senior and the rest of the starters for most of the second half in light of the 65-28 lead at the time.

Trouble in Paris

Headlines of "Paris is Burning" can be seen near the top of newspapers lately as the city descends into a state of turmoil. The burning, rioting and occasional gunfire of the past two weeks have been catastrophic for the French, raising questions about the status of Muslim immigrants causing much of the disturbance.

The legitimacy of liberalism

American foreign policy is built on double standards. One should have no problem in accepting this concept. The nature of international politics requires prioritizing difficult problems. If the Bush doctrine contradicts itself, to paraphrase Walt Whitman, it is only because it contains multitudes. "Double standards" are inescapable for so expansive a doctrine. Saying so doesn't undercut the dynamic force the Bush doctrine and, more generally, America exert in the world.

Hell is coming

I had heard a lot about the crazy religious zealots that come and preach on the IU campus. But until Monday, I had never actually seen any such demonstration. By the clock between Woodburn and Ballantine there was a group consisting of a few men and women and about 15 rather brainwashed-looking children. They basically slammed, well, everything. I guess we could call it a general you-are-all-going-to-burn-in-hell-type rally.

Continuing Kinsey's legacy

In 1947, IU established the Kinsey Institute to research gender, sexuality and reproduction from an interdisciplinary angle. Fifty-eight years later, the decision to launch a similar multidisciplinary doctorate program in gender studies is proof that IU continues to challenge ordinarily accepted ideas.

Five at IU arrested on felony drug charges

Five IU students face a range of drug charges after IU Police Department officers found marijuana, cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms and $1,400 in cash in a pair of residences Tuesday night. The arrests came at the end of a several-month long investigation by IUPD Det. Dave Hannum. Hannum obtained a search warrant at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday for 713 N. Lincoln St., a house where four of the students live, after receiving a tip they would be selling drugs Tuesday night.

Pakistani Student Association receives $5,000 aid donation

The Pakistani Student Association has surpassed its goal of raising $10,000 for victims of the Oct. 8 earthquakes in South Asia, thanks to a $5,000 donation from a local resident. The gift, which comes two weeks after the PSA held a three-day fund-raising drive across campus, is the largest single donation to date, said Hassan Raza, chairman for the campaign. It brings the total amount raised to $10,800.

Gros Louis told to 'enhance' admissions

In delaying the chancellor's search process, IU President Adam Herbert has charged interim chancellor Ken Gros Louis with the task of "enhancing admissions requirements" for freshmen at IU. Gros Louis, who also serves as senior vice president for academic affairs, said he will work on a plan to increase the level of expected excellence that judges applicants on their grade point average, class rank, SAT scores and other standard admissions criteria while he is still in office.
