The Indiana Daily Student has always been a great college newspaper. This semester has been an exceptional one. This semester has been very successful. We have affected IU policy, informed our readers, entertained the public and developed as journalists.

SPEA, Kelley facee off with 'Food Fight'

Normally, a food fight is a waste of food. But that's not the case for IU's School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Kelley School of Business, which have competed against each other to see which school can collect the most food this holiday season. The event is titled "Food Fight!"

'Art Mart' sells handcrafted work for holiday season at Waldron Center

For people interested in giving unique gifts to their friends and family this holiday season, the annual "Art Mart" sale at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St., is the place to look. The sale, which features items by local artists, runs through Dec. 23 and is located in the Flashlight Gallery. There will also be a sale called the "Cash and Carry," located a floor above the "Art Mart," which features wall art for $40 or less.

Ladies First takes over Buskirk

Every year, "Ladies First", IU's female a cappella group, puts on a winter show at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The ladies are now making their final preparations for their concert, and couldn't be more excited about the show. Member Liz Buchanan, a junior, said this year's show has some changes.

Art Sinsabaugh's work on display at Art Museum

The IU Art Museum special exhibitions gallery is currently playing host to "American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh" until Dec. 23. This distinctive collection highlights Art Sinsabaugh's incredible landscape photographs, which were captured by the artist's giant "banquet" camera, so named because it was originally intended to photograph large social gatherings. With this colossal piece of equipment, Sinsabaugh was able to produce 12-by-20-inch negatives, which he often dramatically cropped to evoke the massive sweep of the horizon.

BB King plays again at IU

Though his swagger has been replaced with a rolling limp, this 80-year-old bluesman proved once again that he is undeniably the King. BB King, "The King of the Blues," played Sunday at the IU Auditorium in his first Bloomington performance since 1979. King spent the evening sitting center stage in a plain folding chair, mixing some storytelling with his world-famous blues riffs.

Business students go worldwide

Senior Katie Fitzpatrick sat comfortably in a three-piece business suit as she waited to present a group project Monday. Fitzpatrick remained calm, despite the fact that four of her group members were across the Atlantic Ocean, six time zones away, in Brandenburg, Germany.

Benefit raises $35K for student

A fund-raiser for the IU student diagnosed with bacterial meningitis in September drew more than 600 people and brought in more than $35,000 to help her family with medical bills. Friends of freshman Ashley Lee's family organized the Nov. 28 event at Terre Haute South High School. The donations came in the form of ticket sales, donations and an auction held at the event. All the proceeds raised go directly to Lee's family to help pay for her hospital expenses. She has spent the better part of the past two months in the hospital.

Kelley MBA program faces falling enrollment

Though a decline in enrollment in the master's of business administration program has put a financial strain on the Kelley School of Business, early signs show the tide might be turning. "There's been a firming in the market," said Idalene Kesner, the chairwoman of the MBA program and a professor of strategic management at the business school, who stressed this was not just a Kelley phenomenon. "It's happening all across the nation," she said.

Ph.D. student boards bus for equality at schools

In a civil rights revival movement this spring, communication and culture doctoral student Jonathan Rossing will put his studies on hold in the hope of changing educational policy on a national scale. Rossing and 29 other activists will join the Equality Ride and travel by bus to some of America's most openly anti-gay colleges and universities in an attempt to engage in dialogue with administrators and students about homosexuality, policy and personal values.

Traditionally, columnists at the IDS can use their last columns at the paper to write about whatever they want. How that's different from every other week, I'm not sure, but I'm going to take the opportunity not to tell you, the reader about what to do in your time at IU, but to tell you why the Indianapolis Colts are going to go undefeated.

Indiana State Police to remove college requirement for troopers

INDIANAPOLIS -- Faced with tough competition for new recruits, the Indiana State Police will drop its longtime requirement that would-be troopers have some college education. A requirement that's been in place for more than a decade requires state police candidates to have either 60 credit hours of college, or previous police or military experience. That set the department apart from local agencies that require only a high school diploma.

State high court upholds abortion waiting periods

The Indiana Supreme Court voted 4-1 to require women seeking an abortion to receive counseling from a medical professional -- in person -- and then wait 18 hours before undergoing the abortion. The Indiana Supreme Court ruled Nov. 23 that a medical professional must offer to provide the woman with a picture or drawing of a fetus and the dimensions of the fetus. The medical professional must also inform the woman of the risks of and possible alternatives to an abortion. The woman must also be informed of the medical assistance available for prenatal care and childbirth. She must also be informed that the child's father is legally responsible to financially support the child.

IU hopes to avoid recent history against Indiana State tonight

Believe it or not, the Hoosiers actually entered last week's game against Duke with more recent series success than they do entering today's game against Indiana State. IU had won the previous two meetings against the Blue Devils before losing by eight Wednesday, whereas the Sycamores have won two of the last three meetings with IU and gave the Hoosiers all they could handle last season in a 56-52 Hoosier win.

Owner says her Oriental Grocery Store is a gift to community

The first time Li-Ling Jia came to America from China, she stepped off the airplane without a penny. She said she wasn't afraid of not having any money, though. Money wasn't a priority for her then and it's not today, either, Jia said. Twenty-five years ago, Jia came to the United States through an exchange program. Now, she is the owner of the largest Oriental grocery store in Bloomington. For her, running Obo's Oriental Grocery, 2556 E. Third St., is important because of what the store offers to the Bloomington community, not the money it brings her.

Hoosiers enjoy best season ever

This year, the IU field hockey team enjoyed its best season in the six-year history of the program. Under the guidance of coach Amy Robertson, the Hoosiers set a number of team records, including most wins in a season, highest national ranking, and most importantly, and a trip to the Elite Eight in the first NCAA tournament appearance in school history.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The series of sirens was the first to pierce the crisp, 20-degree morning air. The sharp and clear bell sounded again at one minute. Then came the initial explosion. The iconic Hawkeye press box collapsed on itself Dec. 3 with an earthshaking noise, releasing a massive plume of dust and leaving on its flank -- impervious and unaffected -- the new press box.

IU development might help speed discovery for pharmaceuticals

IU researchers at the School of Informatics and the IU Community Grids Lab have received a $49,000 grant from Microsoft Smart Clients for eScience for a project that could potentially give the pharmaceutical world the boost it needs to propel toward advancements in medical treatments via drugs. The project will entail the creation of a new Web service and intelligent agent-based system enabling chemists to make quicker and more informed decisions while developing new prospective drugs.

Student arrested after marijuana found in room

An IU student is facing felony drug charges after police found 57 grams of marijuana in his room Saturday. According to the IU Police Department report, an officer went to freshman Corbin A. Elliott's room on the third floor of Collins Center after smelling burnt marijuana from outside. Elliott said Monday he did have marijuana in the room and takes responsibility for what happened. But he said he will do what is necessary to stay out of trouble in the future.

Nestle to present food demonstration for students at Kelley School of Business

Recruiters from Nestle Prepared Foods Co. will team up with the Bloomington Cooking School to present a food marketing seminar for approximately 20 students from the Kelley School of Business Tuesday. The purpose of this event, according to the invitation sent out by the company, is to teach students techniques for developing and marketing food products. Nestle owns Lean Cuisine, a food program that focuses on nutritionally aware food.
