Students have long known, and even joked about, the cultural differences between native Hoosiers and East Coast students at IU. Now, the whole country knows. The Wall Street Journal chronicled the Midwest-East Coast rift in an article published Friday. It caught the eye of many in the IU and Bloomington community.

Health Center debuts 'coping skills' program

Counseling and Psychological Services now offers a solution that’s designed to benefit students on campus.Every Monday, CAPS will host “coping skills” sessions free of charge to all IU students.

IU political groups work for campus voting sites

There are few issues where Democrats and Republicans can agree. But with Election Day less than two months away, student organizations on both sides have found common ground: They all want early voting sites on campus before the Nov. 4 elections.

Freshman moves from Mexico to IU for education

With his perfect English, blonde hair and blue eyes, freshman Enrique Molina could easily be mistaken as an all-American boy next door. But the 19-year-old economics and international studies double major from Puebla, Mexico, gives the old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover” a fresh meaning.

Keeper nabs weekly Big Ten honor after 2-win weekend

The IU field hockey team’s sophomore goalkeeper Alex Mann picked up Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week after allowing just one goal during two games in Missouri last weekend, according to a press release. Mann recorded five saves in a shutout victory against Saint Louis, the most saves in a single game by a Hoosier this year. She has 13 saves this season, good for just more than three a game.

Johnson thinking in 3s

Sure, this weekend marked the opening game for the NFL, but it was NASCAR that was in the forefront of my mind on Sunday. With the Chase for the Sprint Cup set to begin next weekend in New Hampshire, there is one driver who sticks out in my mind as the favorite to win the Cup, and you won’t find his name on a beer can. I’m talking about Jimmie Johnson. I know Kyle Busch has basically dominated the field this season, and Carl Edwards has been a consistent winner, but I have a feeling Jimmie has no intention of giving up his title without a fight.

Crean headed to Alabama to pursue 4-star recruit

High school juniors and class of 2010 basketball recruits Lavonte Dority, Lenzelle Smith, Jr. and Alex Gauna were among a handful of recruits on campus Saturday for unofficial visits with the IU men’s basketball team.

A legend in his time, an inspiration in ours

During a pole vault career that spanned from his collegiate days at IU in the 1980s through the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Dave Volz used a technique so effective it is now banned in track and field. The move, now known as “Volzing,” allowed the vaulter to push the bar with their hand, preventing it from falling as the athlete sailed over it. Sixteen years ago, Volz placed fifth in the pole vault in the Olympics. Now, he’s back at IU, volunteering his time to coach pole vaulters on the IU men’s and women’s track and field teams.

Erica Short named Big Ten Player of the Week

After a record-setting weekend that where she notched 61 kills, 24 of them in a single match — an IU record — senior middle blocker and co-captain Erica Short was named Big Ten Player of the Week, according to a press release. Short’s performance, coupled with those of fellow co-captain Juli Pierce and sophomore teammate Ashley Benson, helped lead the IU volleyball team to a 3-0 weekend and first place in the Adidas Classic at Assembly Hall. Benson and Pierce were both named to the all-tournament team, while Short was named tournament MVP.

Astana team: No plans for Lance to ride with us

Lance Armstrong’s reported comeback won’t take place with the Astana cycling team. “He is no part of our team,” Astana team press officer Philippe Maertens told The Associated Press in an e-mail. “Team Astana has no plans with him.”

Famous female author visits IU

The audience laughed, cheered and clapped for best-selling author Elizabeth Gilbert on Monday night in the IU Auditorium. The mostly female crowd came to hear the renowned writer speak about her writing experiences. A majority of the audience had already read her acclaimed novel “Eat, Pray, Love,” which chronicles Gilbert’s trip around the world after a divorce. Others in the audience were in the middle of or almost done with the memoir.

Marching Hundred performs in Colts game

A day after playing in Memorial Stadium, the Marching Hundred traveled to a bit of a bigger venue. Playing in front of a crowd of more than 66,000 fans, the band became the first collegiate marching band to perform in Lucas Oil Stadium, the new home of the Indianapolis Colts.

IU students have a laugh as they plan a skit during a call out meeting at La Casa Saturday evening. The event served to inform students on how to get involved in Latino related organizations on campus and and as a time to socialize.

IU plans to amplify first-year experiences

IU is looking to enhance support for first-year students by launching the Office of First Year Experience Programs. The office is an extension of the Office of Orientation Programs, an office that had previously assisted students only until their first day of classes, said Jack Rhodes, associate vice provost and director of orientation programs. With the new office, Orientation Programs can offer support to students throughout their first year.

Involvement fair to host at least 200 student groups

The largest annual Student Involvement Fair offered at IU will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m today in the Indiana Memorial Union parking lot. Students can expect colorful banners and display tables from more than 200 organizations and volunteer groups from the IU and Bloomington community.
