County’s investment in Chrysler a poor choice

And then, to no one’s surprise, the American auto industry suffered a series of serious setbacks. When Chrysler decided they wouldn’t need as many transmissions as anticipated, they decided not to complete the plant. Tipton County officials were left scratching their heads, hands in their empty pockets.

US declares health emergency for swine flu

WASHINGTON — The U.S. declared a public health emergency Sunday to deal with the emerging new swine flu, much like the government does to prepare for approaching hurricanes.

Sophomore Eric Young hugs Cutters coach Jim Kirkham after their third consecutive Little 500 victory. Young claimed the victory was for everyone who rode for Cutters and Delta Chi, for coach Jim Kirkham and for former Little 500 champion Doug Tate. Tate won Little 500 in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and passed away on April 15, 2009.

The Cutters completed a three-peat Saturday afternoon, winning the 59th running of the Little 500.

It began in 1971. It is a story of passion and conflict, of victory and failure. It is the story of a man who has led both men’s and women’s teams in 40 Little 500s. It is the story of a man whose passion for the Little 500 is surpassed only by his compassion for his riders. This is the story of Tom Schwoegler.

The Mezcla team walks toward final briefing before the sixth heat of Team Pursuit on April 18 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The team consists of freshmen Tari and Cari Morales, senior Cristal Cabrera and freshman Sandra Salcido.

The fact is simple: White teams dominate the men’s and women’s Little 500 fields. With an IU tradition on a predominately white campus that features a stereotypical white sport, it is little surprise the Black Student Union for many years held a picnic at the same time as the men’s race.

Three years ago, Hans Arnesen lapped the entire Little 500 field 39 laps into the race. His Alpha Tau Omega team cruised to victory in a historically dominating performance. And while his feat might be difficult to exceed, his sister, Sonja Arnesen, will try to extend the family’s legacy.
