Hoosiers begin quest 'to be best team in Midwest'

Room service and wake-up calls must be common for the Hoosiers softball team (5-4). The team, which is fresh off trips to Florida and Texas this month, is traveling to Illinois to compete in Southern Illinois' Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic. The Hoosiers travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face Indiana State (4-4), Southern Illinois (5-2) and an untested Harvard team (0-0) this weekend. The team feels it has something to prove this weekend and looks to earn a few wins against tough competition. "We're trying to be the best team in the Midwest -- that's our goal," said IU coach Sara Hayes Nottger. "ISU being in-state and Southern Illinois being in the area gives us the opportunity to compete with the best in the Midwest."

'Last chance' to make NCAA meet

The IU women's swimming and diving team takes to the water again this weekend in the IU "Last Chance" Invitational in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at the SRSC. The Hoosiers host Ohio State, Illinois and the University of Indianapolis in the last meet before the NCAA Championships. For the Hoosiers, the "Last Chance" meet is a great way to show their skills before their trek to the NCAA titles.

IU returns to action in Bucknell Invite

With nearly three weeks gone by, IU coach Barry King's squad is anxious to get back to action this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. This weekend, the Hoosiers will matchup against east coast programs for the first time this season. Among the teams, IU will play Hartwick and Providence, both considered to be east coast powerhouse water polo programs. In addition, the Hoosiers will take on George Washington and Harvard in Lewisburg, Penn., this Saturday and Sunday.

Regular season finale Sunday

After suffering through a 1-8 record in the last nine games, the end is finally near for the Hoosiers. IU will enter its final game against the No. 22 Michigan State Spartans Sunday at home. The 11-15 Hoosiers will have their hands full against MSU, as the Spartans come into the game with a 19-6 overall record. The Spartans are currently on a two-game losing streak, suffering losses at the hands of Ohio State and No. 4 Purdue.

Shakespeare comes to life

'Miss Saigon' big sis to 'Les Mis'

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg are grand writers indeed. They wrote the first French rock opera to hit the stage, "La Revolution Francais." Their musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel Les Miserables opened in 1980 in Palais des Sports in Paris, making it to Broadway only seven years later.

FASA brings artist to IU

The Fine Arts Student Association welcomes visiting artist John Jacobsmeyer to campus this weekend. Jacobsmeyer is the second artist in a three part series in which professional artists come to IU to educate and encourage aspiring artists. FASA is an organization open to studio-art students that works to create opportunities beyond the classroom.

Kappa Alpha Theta to showcase antiques works this weekend

Kappa Alpha Theta sorority will hold its 43rd annual antique show tomorrow and Sunday at the Bloomington Convention Center. Over 35 vendors will have a variety of items to explore this weekend, including jewelry, fine and folk art, silver, formal and country furniture.

IU study urges increased school safety measures

No early ending in sight for stalemate over gay marriage

We congratulate the Big Red ticket for its successful campaign, and we hope it will approach the upcoming year with the goals it has shared with students in mind.

Macedonian president presumed dead after plane crashes in Bosnia

Rebels converge on capital

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Rebel fighters moved closer to the capital Thursday and awaited an order to attack, their leader said, as pressure mounted for President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to resign and for the deployment of international peacekeepers. Haitians and foreigners fled the capital, which was expected to fall easily to the insurgents since hordes of Haiti's small, ill-equipped police force have been deserting their posts without a rebel in sight.

A little bit of wisdom

I vaguely remember the assassination attempt on President Reagan. I vividly remember the elation of Keith Smart's game-winning shot in 1987. I remember feeling rage as the Los Angeles police officers who beat Rodney King were acquitted and the horror of the riots that ensued. How could I remember all of these things? I remember because not only was Wednesday the 14th anniversary of Milli Vanilli winning the Best New Artist Grammy, but it was also my 27th birthday.

Big Red wins IUSA election

The four member executives-elect consists of President Katie Diggins, Vice President Angel Rivera while Meagan Merrill and Jason Sondhi will serve as treasurer and secretary respectively. Kerry wants notice before shipping jobs abroad

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Presidential hopeful John Kerry said Wednesday he would require companies to give their employees a three-month warning before sending their jobs abroad, blaming President Bush for job losses in an appeal to displaced workers in the Democratic battleground state of Ohio. "I won't come here and tell you that if I'm president all of Ohio's factories will spring back to life, that all the rivers of steel will flow again," Kerry said in a speech at the University of Toledo. "You wouldn't believe me if I did, and you'd be right."
