Students, professors reflect on Madrid bomb attacks

Bombs exploded in Madrid trains and subway stations March 11, causing people from all over the world to be affected, including students attending IU. The attacks, which killed 191 people and injured more than 1,800, have had a direct effect on a number of individuals at IU, either because of personal loss or because they felt an affinity for the victims and those affected.

Music, life, history spark playwright's inspiration

There was a time when Ntozake Shange did not wear shoes. Some may have considered this strange, but for Shange, it was more a question of the familiarity of life and the substance of art that dictated her wild Bohemian behavior throughout her youth. "I didn't know how to wear shoes, I didn't dance in shoes," Shange said. "And then I'm at the Tonys, wearing shoes." Shange, a Tony-nominated writer best known for her play "For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf: A Choreopoem," visited the Wellz-Metz Theatre Monday to give a lecture on her craft.

Tux is a penguin. As the mascot of Linux, he is probably the most famous penguin in the world. His likeness was certainly the center of attention in Alumni Hall Tuesday, as the Unix Systems Support Group held the sixth annual LinuxFest, celebrating the open-source operating system.

IUSF decides to let it ride

As a fella much wiser than ourselves once contended, "Sometimes, you eat the bar. And sometimes, well, he eats you." Members of Pi Kappa Phi have experienced both occasions. Last October, the fraternity was suspended from all IFC-sponsored activities after a pledge was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning. One week ago, though, the IU Student Foundation Appeals Board finally decided that deactivated members would be allowed to ride in Little 500 as an independent team.

IU hopes offense will keep streak alive

After a slow start Saturday at the Hoosier Invitational, the Hoosiers' offense took off Sunday. IU (19-16) only mustered three runs during Saturday's two losses to Western Kentucky and Notre Dame. The team, clearly frustrated from Saturday's outing, gained its confidence back Sunday by beating St. Louis twice with a combined score of 16-4.

Hoosiers to take on Valpo in final tuneup

Before Big Ten play opens this weekend, the Hoosiers (15-7) have one final tune-up at home against Valparaiso (3-12). IU is currently on a seven-game winning streak, and the team has gone 14-2 since its 1-5 start.

Balance key for new season

New coaches and a senior-laden roster highlight the Hoosiers' upcoming 2004 football season as IU coach Gerry DiNardo opens his third spring practice at IU. While there is a large number of returning players, this spring is the first time IU has the maximum number of scholarships. "Our roster is balanced. We are in a position where we can continue to build the program, and this is a significant step," DiNardo said. "We are better than we have been in the previous two years, especially when it comes to depth. That's something we're excited about."

'Jubilee' entertains with high energy performance

Walking into the Buskirk-Chumley Theater last Thursday, an eager audience was greeted by Doofus Doolittle's "Howdys" and "Yeehaws." Doolittle, played by producer Randy Newman, headed the ensemble that entertained the generally older audience with its bluegrass and gospel music mixed with backwoods humor.

Archives chronicle IU's past

Tucked away in Bryan Hall, Room 201, the IU Archives provides an intriguing look at one of America's most storied campuses. The archives contain more than two million photographs, Arbutuses dating back to 1894 and information on Alfred Kinsey that Liam Neeson recently utilized to research for an upcoming role.

IU ranks in top 10 for private sector donations

The secret to "living well"

Each semester, Professor Carol Kennedy has her "living well" students write letters to loved ones who have hypothetically died. In the letters, students have to tell a loved one how they feel about the person. Kennedy said one student last semester wrote a letter to her father, whom she thought was well at the time.
