Freshman standout named to U-20 U.S. soccer team

Ofori Sarkodie, a standout freshman on IU's Big Ten champion men's soccer team, was selected to the United States Under-20 men's national soccer team, U.S. head coach Thomas Rongen announced Monday.

Lawmakers convene for 2007 session

Gov. Mitch Daniels and lawmakers gathered Monday for the start of the 2007 session with plans to tackle some big issues, including property-tax relief and a new budget that provides schools with bigger funding increases than last time.

Woman reports rape by 3 men on west side

A Bloomington resident was allegedly raped late Saturday night, police said. The complainant, a 19-year-old female, reported being approached by three men at Suburban Lanes bowling alley, 2634 N. Walnut St.

Stop smirking

One doesn't know whether to laugh or cry anymore. Ever since 2004, when I bet my Democratic mates that the president would win handily (and didn't have to buy my own meals for weeks afterward), I have been incapable of mustering much laughter at the expense of Mr. Bush's IQ. Still, if your goal is to get a quick laugh, you could start in with some confidence poking fun at just that fact.

Remember the Knight

Texas Tech men's basketball coach Bob Knight won his 880th game on New Year's Day, surpassing former North Carolina coach Dean Smith as the winningest in NCAA Men's Division 1 basketball history. Several people associated with IU, including President Adam Herbert and Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan, have offered their congratulations, recognizing the greatness of Knight's achievement. Even former IU President Myles Brand, who was responsible for Knight's firing in September 2000, issued a brief congratulatory statement.

Van Gogh and daily life: How 'Starry Night' affects your favorite movies

In a recent random survey of about 30 students living in Forest Quad, 94 percent were familiar with Vincent van Gogh's 19th-century painting "Starry Night." It has become such an important icon for art that almost everyone has seen it on a poster, in a calendar, or in other random places.

Sorority recruitment ends in smiles

Freshman Lucy Rodriguez beamed as she stood among her new sisters in matching navy and gray hooded sweat shirts upon the steps of Delta Gamma on Sunday afternoon. "I couldn't be more excited," she said, clasping her fingers. Rodriguez was one of more than 800 women who received invitations to be members of one of the 19 Panhellenic Association sorority chapters at IU.

Hill returns to office, focuses on health care, oil dependence

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- For Rep. Baron Hill, the second time around is a little sweeter than the first. The fourth-term Democrat took the oath of office as 9th District Congressman on Saturday in the Lee H. Hamilton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse after defeating Republican Mike Sodrel Nov. 7 during one of the closest and most-watched congressional races in the country.

Partial stadium demolition begins

IU must tear down to build up. First to go are Memorial Stadium's north end-zone bleachers, a demolition that began last week. Fifty-five million dollars later, new weight-training and basketball-practice facilities and softball and baseball complexes will adorn the IU campus.

Welcome Home

On a day when most IU students funneled back on campus for the start of a new semester, the IU men's basketball team had its own homecoming. The Hoosiers returned from a 74-67 loss at Ohio State on Tuesday for their Big Ten home opener Sunday at Assembly Hall. With a rowdy home crowd behind them, the Hoosiers rolled to a decisive 73-51 win against Michigan State, moving their Big Ten record to 1-1. Sunday's victory is the ninth consecutive win for the Hoosiers when opening Big Ten play at Assembly Hall.
