I've got a message for all you doubters out there

·

The football gods have tortured Colts fans since the move from Baltimore in 1984. Losing seasons became the norm for the blue and white until coach Ted Marchibroda and quarterback Jim Harbaugh caught lightning in a bottle with some deep runs into the playoffs in the 1990s. Despite some success, every season rooting for the Colts has ended in disappointment for me.

No. 20 Hoosiers struggle out west

·

The No. 20 IU water polo team headed out west to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., to face some of the nations' top ranked teams. And the competition lived up to its billing as the Hoosiers dropped all four games they played, falling to 3-5 on the season.

Wrestling squad loses twice during weekend

·

The IU wrestling team fell on hard times again this weekend, dropping numerous matches to No. 1 Minnesota and North Carolina State at University Gym. The No. 18 Hoosiers lost to the top-ranked Gophers 29-7 on Friday night and followed with a 22-18 loss against the Wolfpack on Saturday.

Hoosier women win late against Gophers

·

Down by as many as 14 points early in the first half, the IU women's basketball team (15-9, 4-7) staged a second-half 69-65 comeback win against Minnesota (13-11, 5-6).

NO HORSING AROUND

·

MIAMI -- Purple rain at the Super Bowl. Golden memories for Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy and the Indianapolis Colts. In a sloppy, exciting, rain-soaked NFL title game Sunday, the Colts defeated the Bears 29-17 behind 247 yards passing from Manning, the star quarterback who finally won the big one after nine record-setting seasons. "We put a lot of hard work and a lot of effort into this," said Manning, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player. "It's all happening pretty fast right now. I'm excited. It's something we'll enjoy for quite some time." In a good ol'-fashioned South Florida soaker, the football squirted loose and bounced all over the waterlogged field. It resulted in eight turnovers, including two late interceptions thrown by Chicago's Rex Grossman that sealed the game for Indianapolis.

The long and winding road

·

Kelvin Sampson can explain it to you quite simply. "Teams are better at home than they are on the road," he said in a press conference the day before IU's home win against Michigan on Jan. 27. When pressed by the same reporter to expand on the topic, he scoffed at the notion.

Hoosiers fall in heartland to Hawkeyes

·

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- It seemed like things were heading in the right direction for D.J. White on Saturday afternoon. Just 24 seconds into the Hoosiers' matchup against Iowa, White grabbed a pass with his back to the basket. He backed down his defender with a few dribbles, spun to his right and sank a high-arching jumper.

Rebounding, free throw problems sink IU

·

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- For 21 games -- 16 of which resulted in wins -- the IU men's basketball team has prided itself on its ability to crash the boards when all else failed. Saturday, in the 22nd game of the Hoosiers' season, that identity was lost.

Chocolate Fest entices thousands

·

Flora Knable spent her birthday selecting gourmet pieces of chocolate and washing the sweets down with Upland Chocolate Stout. "It's my favorite," said the Bloomington resident of the stout. "I've made it before on my own, except we called it 'Chocolate Fog' because it was a school day with a two-hour delay." Knable was one of several thousand who attended the 10th annual Chocolate Fest Saturday night at the Bloomington Convention Center.

Citizens celebrate the city's character

·

Playful, active, neighborly, artistic. Bloomington residents are all these things. They will have the opportunity to celebrate such qualities this year with the "Be Bloomington" campaign. Sponsored by Mayor Mark Kruzan and Bloomington, the campaign will feature a different theme each month, along with activities that support it.

Monroe County Jail works to solve 'overloaded conditions'

·

Currently, 270 people reside in the Monroe County Jail. But the jail's capacity is 124. Monroe County Sheriff Jim Kennedy is in charge of the facility, which is across the street from Smallwood Plaza. A genial yet stern man, he smiles when talking, except when referring to the inmates or their housing.

Scholarly love is in the air

·

As the sparks and romance of Valentine's Day linger in the not-so-distant future, many students, including graduate students, are faced with doubt and uncertainty.

Trustees debate president's role again

·

The battle over the leadership roles of the IU president, which the trustees tried to put to rest a year ago when they restructured the University administration at their January 2005 meeting, seems to have resurfaced again.

Just fine?

·

It began as a way to help first-time offenders of misdemeanors keep their records clean. Now, the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office's Pretrial Diversion Program is big business. In 2003, each offender paid $304. In 2004, each paid $329. Last year it was $360, and now the Pretrial Diversion Program fetches at least $399 per customer. Cha-ching.

The pursuit of happiness

·

"Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence." These are the words of Aristotle. One of the greatest thinkers in the history of the world came to this conclusion. It isn't some deeply philosophical end that drives men. The purpose is not success or wealth, honor or pride. Happiness is the end all, the telos of human existence.

Liberty for all

·

The immigration reform debate rages on and since the conservative pundits and bigoted politicians have refused to desist, so have I. The negative backlash I received in response to last week's column was saddening but only convinced me more of the need for alternative voices in defense of the American way.

Plague-iarism

·

At first glance, there appears to be a rather unfortunate trend at IU. According to statistics from the Office of Student Ethics, plagiarism cases at IU have more than quadrupled in the last 10 years. In the 1995-1996 academic year there were 30 cases of plagiarism reported, the office said. In the 2005-2006 academic year there were 132 people reported for plagiarizing.

Expensive Harry Potter already online bestseller

·

NEW YORK -- It's months away from being on bookshelves, but fans can't get enough of the seventh -- and final -- Harry Potter book, no matter the cost. Not only is "Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows" topping the charts of Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, a deluxe edition, priced at $65, is No. 2, outselling the "You" diet book, Sen. Barack Obama's book and an Oprah Winfrey-endorsed memoir by Sidney Poitier.
