Don’t apologize

·

It isn’t easy for an advocate of small government to bemoan actors in the White House.

Judicial review

·

While a ruling will probably not be issued until late June 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments Wednesday for what could turn out to be one of its most controversial decisions in decades. The U.S. Supreme Court is going to consider whether Guantanamo Bay prisoners have a Constitutional right to challenge their detentions in civil courts.

TV 2007: A Retrospective

·

This year has been a very interesting year for television, even more so than most years. This is my last column of 2007, and as I consider myself the resident TV guru on the Editorial Board, it’s only fitting that the following consists of the moments I consider paramount to TV.

IMU celebrates for all holidays

·

While most campus decorations are associated with Christian symbolism, student religious group leaders said they were not personally offended by the University’s efforts. However, this year, the IMU has gone “out of its way” to begin including other religions in the winter holiday season, said Rabbi Sue Shifron, director of the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center.

Get your study on

·

Only two weeks separate students from being free and able to relax for winter break. Those two weeks include one giant obstacle: finals. Students often stay up late cramming for tests, something that makes experts frown. IU health educator Kathryn Brown said students should avoid all-nighters.

Indiana habitats hurt by aquarium dumping

·

Invasive plant and animal species from pet aquariums have turned up in local waterways, which has put the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department on the offensive. Last spring, it launched the “Got Aquarium?” awareness campaign to discourage locals from dumping their aquariums into natural habitats.

Oversea-ing health

·

Studying abroad is a great way to differentiate yourself as a student, possibly cheaper than a semester’s tuition at IU, and apparently a major threat to your mental health. During the annual conference of the Canadian Bureau for International Education last week, several officials stressed the mental health-risks associated with studying abroad.

A generation of artists

·

Every morning when I wake up, I blast M.I.A. as I get ready to head to campus. My outfit usually consists of some absurd combination of eclectic clothing that the non-mainstream, highly mobilized portion of my generation finds, for unknown reasons, stylish. And yes, although I am in support of it, I am disappointed in the TV writers’ strike because some of my favorite shows, such as “South Park,” “The Office” and “The Daily Show”/“The Colbert Report” duo, are now reduced to reruns.

Buskirk-Chumley turns 85

·

For decades, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater has remained one of the most recognizable buildings on Kirkwood with its bright red and white marquee and the iconic “Indiana” sign. But this landmark, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this month, has not always been the place Bloomington residents know today.
