Speaker threatens to disband Iraq’s parliament

·

The speaker of Iraq’s fragmented parliament threatened Tuesday to disband the legislature, saying it is so riddled with distrust it appears unable to adopt the budget or agree on a law setting a date for provincial elections.

Party poopers

·

The idea of the “electability” of certain presidential candidates has been discussed a lot recently. As I see it, electability as a reason to vote for someone is a somewhat shallow argument at best.

A matter of faith

·

It seems Tom Cruise is still going crazy, or is just further along than we thought he was a few years ago. Many of you have probably already seen the video, prepared for a private Scientology award ceremony, in which Tom Cruise rants about Orgs, SPs and other nonsensical phrases.

Guns blazin'

·

There are some issues, such as illegal immigration, that Democrats won’t even touch with a 10-foot pole. No issue proves to be as divisive for the party, however, as gun control. Indeed, the last serious debate over gun violence occurred more than 15 years ago with the passage of the Brady Bill.

Donation discrimination

Do you have a history of intravenous drug abuse? Have you lived in countries where there have been outbreaks of Mad Cow Disease? Do you have syphilis? Are you a man who has had sex with a man at any time since 1977? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you cannot donate blood in the United States. Yet, answering “yes” to one of these questions doesn’t indicate the risk one might normally suspect.

Indiana State Police officers are on special watch for distracted drivers this week. The Indiana State Police declared this week “Crashes are No Accident Week.” The idea of this project is to promote safer driving and to elaborate on the definition of “accident.”

Students of War

Students of war

The lure of a debtless post-graduate life and the pride of serving Indiana convince dozens of IU students to join the National Guard. As the slogan went: “One weekend a month, two weeks a year.” But as combat missions in Iraq continue, a frat-boy medic, a wannabe tattoo artist, and a Jesus-loving piano player are among the 75 students now anticipating their desert deployment – with no guarantee of coming home.

Hey, big spenders

·

A bikini wax, lap dances, and Pizza Express are just a few of the things Bloomington residents purchase. For one week, we challenged a SRSC personal trainer, sorority sister, Yogi’s bartender, IU campus bus driver, and the deputy mayor of Bloomington to record everything they bought, where they bought it, and how much it cost. Some of the results were downright ridiculous.

Brandon Foltz

For those who were unable to get tickets, the Jacobs School of Music streamed a live feed of the performance on its Web site. A native of Bloomington, Bell will join the IU Jacobs School of Music as a senior lecturer in the String Department.
