By means of a dominant fastball and slider, the Pataskala, Ohio, native has quietly transformed into one of the most feared pitchers in the Big Ten. Arnett currently leads the Hoosiers in wins (4-1), ERA (2.57), strikeouts (35) and innings pitched (35).

Insurgents kill 9 police in southern Afghanistan

Insurgents staged two attacks against police in Afghanistan on Thursday, killing nine officers and wounding six others, officials said, in the latest violence against the lightly armed force that has born the brunt of rising attacks across the country.

Bobcat walks into Arizona bar; 2 men wounded

A bobcat attacked three people in the central Arizona community of Cottonwood, including two men who were bitten by the animal after it wandered inside a bar.

17 injured after tornado rips through Mississippi

Severe weather across the South unleashed tornadoes in rural Mississippi, including one that shattered dozens of homes, flattened a church and injured at least 17 people, authorities said Thursday.

Voices and Visions, an IU organization focused on promoting a dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims, will be sponsoring a workshop for journalists in Bloomington and the surrounding area.

Fun walk raises money for child surgery

The Operation Smile Student Association at IU will put on the Miles for Smiles Fun Walk to raise money for Operation Smile, a nationwide charity that funds facial reconstructive surgeries for children The walk will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Dunn Meadow.

Self-defense seminar teaches protection

Martial Arts expert Dave Castoldi will teach a “Defense Against Knife Attack” seminar from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation room 169.

Korean Night hopes to draw all cultures

There will be dancing, music, games and displays at this year’s Korean Night. And afterward, there will be a quiz. The fifth annual Korean Night will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Willkie Auditorium. The interactive culture night is sponsored by the Korean Student Association and has a “time machine” theme.

For those who want to relive their fall tailgating memories, the third annual Campus Cornhole Championships might be just the ticket. The event is being held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Templeton Elementary at 1400 S. Brenda Lane.
