PARIS -- Much of Paris' opera and theater world closed its doors Tuesday, as thousands of artists and musicians took to the streets in a protest against government plans to change their unemployment insurance benefits. NEW YORK -- Screenwriter Nora Ephron is this year's recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Writers Guild of America, East. LOS ANGELES -- Filmmaker Roman Polanski's work should be judged on its merits, not on his crime, the victim of a 1977 sexual assault wrote in an op-ed article.

Grand jury opens investigation into Rhode Island nightclub disaster, deaths

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A grand jury opened an investigation Wednesday into the nightclub inferno that killed 97 people, and members of the heavy metal group whose pyrotechnics are suspected of starting the fire could testify as early as Thursday. At least two members of the band Great White were seen entering the National Guard training center in East Greenwich where the grand jury met behind closed doors.

Monologues for the future

Last year, Ben Barone worked as an usher for a performance of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues." Being a male, he could not perform in the show and did not have any other opportunity to help with V-Day, a national effort to abolish violence against women and girls. Now a sophomore, Barone not only is performing a new monologue, but he also co-wrote it with Bloomington residents Patrick Kinsman and Clint Wolfe.

Maggie Smith makes a Broadway comeback

LONDON -- Maggie Smith will return to Broadway for the first time in over 13 years late this fall in the David Hare play "The Breath of Life," the play's producer, Robert Fox, said Tuesday. But she won't be joined by her co-star, Judi Dench, who prefers to stay home in England, Fox said.

TV host plays Bloomington bar

Paul Gilmartin from the popular TV show "Dinner and a Movie" graced Bear's Comedy Caravan stage with his presence Monday night. The stand-up comedian decided to stop in Bloomington and visit his old stomping grounds. Dressed in everyday attire and reading a newspaper, he seemed at home.

Grammys become a family tradition

NEW DELHI, India -- While Norah Jones' music is little known in most of India, her sweep at the Grammys brought a wave of pride and cheer to a home in southern New Delhi, where her father sat watching the awards ceremony. Jones is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, the 82-year-old sitarist who's India's best known musician.

Four's a charm for 'Cats'

"Cats," the longest running musical in Broadway history and winner of seven Tony awards, plays the IU Auditorium at 8 p.m. tonight and Wednesday. Since its opening at the New London Theater nearly 23 years ago, "Cats" has been seen by over 8 million people in 26 countries. This week's performances will add more people to that already impressive number.

LOS ANGELES -- Serious film proved no match for a daredevil and a big old frat party. Ben Affleck's superhero adventure "Daredevil" remained the No. 1 movie for the second straight weekend with $18.9 million, pushing its 10-day total to $70.3 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

NEW YORK -- The network of Eminem and "The Osbournes" is getting ready for war, too. Much like the broadcast and cable news networks, MTV is laying out plans to cover a potential war with Iraq, expecting to be both a news source and sounding board for teenagers and young adults.
