Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton announced the activation of a new 501c3 nonprofit corporation, City of Bloomington Capital Improvements, Inc., on Jan. 13. According to a city of Bloomington press release, CBCI will focus their efforts on improving arts, technology, jobs and housing in the city.

The Indiana Office of Technology has blocked the popular social media app TikTok owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company, from being used in state systems and devices. The Office of Technology consistently tests and ensures the integrity of the state system is unharmed, according to the Associated Press .

Needle exchange programs aim to keep people safe and healthy by providing sterile needles which decreases the chances of getting HIV and hepatitis. The programs are able to give people support and referrals for substance use disorder, medical and mental health treatments, and social services. It does not increase crime in areas where the programs are located.

IU student ambassadors and volunteers for the Gift of Life Marrow Registry will set up tables across campus to recruit donors for blood stem cell and bone marrow transplants Nov. 11-18. 18 as part of Swab Week. Their goal is to inform students of the organization and increase the number of people on their registry to better help find matches for patients.

Police and county officials, along with a hired firm from Indianapolis, cleared an unhoused encampment Oct. 6 off public Monroe County land south of Second Street. This removal is one of several in the past year as the city and county has continuously cleared camps, forcing those who are unhoused to relocate.

In February 2022, Indiana University announced the university’s new Student Mental Health Initiative led by Dr. Aaron Carroll, IU’s Chief Health Officer. It consists of three taskforces: culture and climate, services and support, and policies and protocols. These taskforces consist of several recommendations and actions to improve students’ mental health across all of IU’s campuses in Indiana.
