When my dad told me we were moving to Bloomington 13 years ago, I immediately started crying. I panicked. I wouldn’t live in Philadelphia anymore. I’d have to make new friends. These thoughts freaked me out, and it seemed impossible to comprehend. I remember pacing around our living room, and suddenly saying, “It’s okay. This is fine. It’ll be fun.” My coping mechanisms have always confused me.

In the middle of the city of New York, all I could think about was following those around me. I didn’t trust myself to lead a group of college students in the chaos of 34th Street. I simply followed; maybe the other media students I was on this trip with would know where to go. I was mainly thinking, “Maybe my feet won’t be as sore today if we’re going to take the subway.”

The first ever IU women’s basketball game I attended was in 2012. It was also the first time I'd ever watched the sport of basketball. I vaguely remember the names of all the players now at the age of 19; I can only recall that the players with the numbers five and 10 were talented and that some of the players were tall.

When I was little, I used to love going into Apple stores and playing around with the different iPhones and iPads. I remember feeling starstruck at how cool an iPhone was — every app had something different to offer. I could take pictures with it and see those right away instead of having to take a camera to CVS and pay to print out the photos. The phone felt so sleek in my hand, and I felt stylish just simply holding it.

The first time I watched the movie “La La Land” when I was 17, I got to the ending and thought, What? That's it? Over the course of two hours, I watched Mia struggle to find a role as an actor, and Sebastian struggle to start up his jazz club. But they found each other along the way — wasn’t that supposed to be the ending? Their dreams didn’t work out, but they had each other, didn’t they?

A couple days ago, I was scrolling through my messages to find my friend’s number to send her something. I watched names disappear over the top of my screen as I continued my search. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d texted some of these people in my phone, people I'd worked on projects with and friends from high school.

If you had the opportunity to go on a beautiful vacation, but as soon as you return home, your memory would be wiped of this experience and all the pictures you took would be erased, would you go? Is it worth it?

One of my favorite things to do during the year is walk through the foliage. All the red and orange and yellow leaves are a welcome change after months of hot, humid weather and plain, green leaves. But the fall leaves save us; they encourage us to go out and enjoy being in nature with a different backdrop.

A few years ago, I walked into Panera and placed my order. Classic grilled cheese. After I paid and filled my plastic cup with water, I walked further into the café to find a seat. Most were taken by families with kids running around or students with laptops, but I managed to find a table by the window. As I sat down, I noticed that at the table next to me, there was an older man with an IU cap eating his soup alone.

If you live all the way across campus from the gym, you probably don’t want to venture on a 30-minute walk just to get a workout in. It's not a convenient or appealing choice.

I usually make my weekly visit to Kroger on Saturdays at noon. It's one of the busiest times of the week; college students replenish their snack supplies and families do their grocery shopping for the week.

Kroger and Hobby Lobby start to pull out the fall decorations as soon as Sept. 1 hits. From scarecrow balloons to pumpkins, the fall season is in full swing before the calendar even says so.

The first week of school, my Italian professor asked the class who already had Instagram downloaded on their phone. Obviously, there was a murmur of yeses, along with the singular no from me. I wasn’t surprised. Instagram is basically the new Facebook. Everyone has an account.

When I was little, we used to go to the library every Saturday. I wouldn’t leave without at least five or six books in my arms, all on the verge of falling over any second. I’d read one of those books every day. By the time Saturday came around, it was time to exchange my books for new ones.

Last weekend, I was feeling inspired and decided to clean my room. I began by organizing these huge bins of books and pencils I had stuffed in my dressers. The bin was really heavy, maybe 20 pounds. I could barely lift it two feet to the ground.

Last Wednesday, I woke up at 6:30 a.m. to my brother getting ready for school. Oh yeah, school is starting for him again. Summer had flown by without me noticing. In between vacation, running and doing work for my internship, August had snuck up on me.

About a year ago, I was presenting my project at the IU Intensive Freshman Seminar conference. My group and I had run an experiment on how empathetic professional runners are depending on their speed in relation to people who don’t run. I was asked millions of questions about my process, findings and overall experience in the class.
