With the recent white nationalist rallies in Virginia and the rise of the self-proclaimed alt-right, it comes as no surprise that anti-Semitism is alive and well. It may come as more of a surprise that the left is sometimes just as guilty as the right. This mostly comes from many people's inability to separate Judaism from the nation of Israel, but also from the inability to recognize the presence of anti-Semitism as a whole.

The closing of innovative and diverse theater shows is an unfortunate reflection of current society. Broadway fans from all over were devastated this past weekend to hear the closing announcement for “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.” The innovative new musical written by Dave Malloy is a 70-page excerpt of "War and Peace" adapted into an electropop opera.

College students are generally above the intended age range for young adult literature, but that does not change the quality or impression these novels can have on a person of any age, including adults. For that reason, I like to keep up with the latest trends and read the most recent books in young adult literature the same way I did when I was in junior high school. There is a new era emerging in literature for young readers that will hopefully permanently change and improve the genre as a whole.

The journey for open and efficient conversations about mental health is a long and challenging one, especially on college campuses. Much progress has been made with common mental illnesses like depression and anxiety that are especially prevalent among college students, and many campuses like IU offer counseling and resources. While this is a positive step forward, many mental health issues are largely unaddressed and left to silently manifest themselves on college campuses.

The academic fields of science, technology, engineering and math are largely comprised of men. They are extremely male-dominated in both universities and the workforce, with women making up only 29 percent of the science and engineering workforce. Because of this, women in STEM are highly celebrated and sought after. From a young age, women are now being encouraged to pursue careers in STEM, but sometimes the push to end sexism in the STEM field is harmful and sexist in its own way.

The 89th annual Academy Awards were surely memorable. After the mix up, the winner of the Best Picture award was the film “Moonlight,” directed by Barry Jenkins. The film focuses on the life and struggles of a gay black boy in the housing projects near Miami. The most likely contender besides “Moonlight” for Best Picture was “La La Land”. While they are both undoubtedly excellent films, “La La Land” winning Best Picture would have been far less important.

In the height of political turmoil this week, it’s hard to decide what issue to think about at any given time. It feels as if the rug is being pulled from beneath our feet. This column will at least center your focus for a few minutes on the Republican party’s threat to accessible health care.

This past weekend, the Women’s March on Washington had between 3 and 4 million attendants in total, three times more than Trump’s inauguration. However, it’s essential that we understand the feminist movement has always prioritized white women and ignored women of color.
