With John McCain down in the polls and Barack Obama paraphernalia
covering campus, Bloomington conservatives might feel a bit discouraged
for today’s election.
But to members of IU College Republicans, McCain is anything but the underdog.
IU College Republicans Chairwoman and junior Chelsea Kane said the
polls showing McCain behind Obama are not slowing their campaign
efforts.

It was a last-minute decision for junior Steve Rothkopf: ukulele over guitar.Along with the nearly $12,500 he raised, the switch helped Rothkopf win Big Man on Campus Friday night. The event, put on by Zeta Tau Alpha, brought in a total of $178,000 for breast cancer awareness and research, $18,000 more than Zeta’s goal.Dressed like Jason Mraz in a fedora and T-shirt, Rothkopf, a member of Theta Chi, performed the singer’s “I’m Yours.” Rothkopf said he had planned to play the guitar, but decided the ukulele would be more effective.

apparel at an IU Ballet rehearsal, but at Monday’s “Big Man on Campus”
practice, it was the norm.
BMOC is an annual male talent competition put on by Zeta Tau Alpha to
raise money for breast cancer awareness. Last year’s show raised
$137,000, according to IU Zeta chapter’s Web site. The house wants to

Fraternity.
To some, the word symbolizes brotherhood, scholarship and philanthropy;
to others, it connotes partying, hazing and getting free alcohol.
But this year, Sigma Phi Epsilon wants to break the second stereotype.
For its first year as an on-campus fraternity, the house has declared
itself alcohol-free, even though anyone familiar with IU’s dry-campus
policy might find this redundant since all fraternities are supposed to
be dry.

Thursday’s Neo Unity event brought all four greek councils together for
the first time to promote diversity in the community. The idea came to
Ruchi Shah, the president of the Multi-Cultural Greek Council, two
years ago when she saw a need to network with other councils outside
her own.

Advocates, activists and survivors will join together today to promote
awareness of sexual and domestic violence at the annual Take Back the
Night march and rally.
“We want them to reclaim themselves and say they are survivors,” said
Indira Dammu, president of the IU Women’s Student Association. “We call
them survivors, not victims.”

As rain poured over Dunn Meadow on Friday morning, Stephen Poremba,
Interfraternity Council vice president of recruitment, feared a repeat
of last year’s recruitment kick-off in which rain hindered attendance.
But by Friday afternoon, the downpour stopped and the kick-off was back
on.

Thubten J. Norbu, the eldest brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, was not only a retired IU professor but was an ambassador for Tibet and human rights around the world.Norbu, 87, died of natural causes at 3 p.m. Friday at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington.
