With the lights dimmed, the speakers pounded music and the anxious crowd sang and danced in their seats. The actors’ silhouettes were projected on stage as they set up for their first sketch. When the dark lights turned bright, the room quieted as members began speaking their lines.

The Monroe County Community Theater celebrated 30 years of its Shakespeare in the Park series Thursday evening. The performance recreated the very first play they brought to stage, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” in the Waldron, Hill and Buskirk Park.

The award-winning Vietnamese filmmaker Ash Mayfair has several upcoming events at the IU Cinema next week. Mayfair will be attending a screening of her film “The Third Wife,”at 7 p.m. Sept. 19. The film originally debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018. Mayfair will be interviewed at the cinema at 5 p.m. the following day.

The 14th annual Paddling Film Festival came to Bloomington at 7:30 Sunday night. Screening at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, the festival has screened in more than 120 cities since its inception in 2006 to a cumulative audience of more than 282,000 people in the United States, Canada and the world at large.

The Bishop Bar in Bloomington is celebrating its 10th anniversary this Saturday. Located at 123 S. Walnut St., the Bishop regularly shows bands for crowds of either 18 or 21 and up. This weekend, the bar will have several bands from the Bloomington area, including Mike Adams at his Honest Weight, Tammar and Busman's Holiday.

A classical composition echoed within the walls of Ford-Crawford Hall on Sept. 3 during the Flute Academy’s Inaugural Concert. The budding program, affiliated with the Jacobs School of Music, began in June and has worked to provide musical resources for flutists across Bloomington.

The seventh annual Kiwanis Indiana Balloon Fest will occur this weekend at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. It will cost $20 for a carload ticket and $30 for a weekend pass, according to the festival’s website.

The eighth annual B'Town Jazz Fest brought local and nationally recognized musicians to Bloomington this weekend to celebrate the city's jazz history and heritage. Garnering a largely older audience, jazz acts included IU's senior lecturer Monika Herzig Acoustic Project with Janiece Jaffe and Luke Gillespie & IU Jazz Faculty Members.

This weekend at Windrunner Dance Studio, Monroe County Civic Theater is kicking off its 30th season with Shakespeare's “Twelfth Night.” The show features an ensemble cast and a set hand-painted by Roy Sillings who also plays Malvolio.
