Indiana baseball took the opening matchup of its weekend series against UCLA behind power from the offense as well as a disciplined performance from the pitching staff. Junior left fielder Devin Taylor, redshirt sophomore center fielder Korbyn Dickerson and junior shortstop Tyler Cerny all launched home runs for the Hoosiers. Senior lefty pitcher Ryan Craft and graduate student pitcher Cole Gilley shut the Bruins offense down, which gave the Hoosiers a pivotal Friday 5-1 victory in Jackie Robinson Stadium to extend their winning streak to six games.

Redshirt junior Grant Holderfield hopped off the mound to back up sophomore catcher TJ Schuyler as a pop fly was well hit to left field with runners on second and third base for Northern Kentucky University. When Holderfield turned around, however, he wasn’t greeted with a throw from junior left fielder Devin Taylor.

Before they had the chance to redeem themselves this past Tuesday against Purdue University Fort Wayne, mother nature brought cold weather, allowing the Hoosiers more time to prepare for four straight days of baseball, including their home opener.

Joey Brenczewski pounded his chest as he rounded third base following a pinch-hit three-run home run. It moved Indiana baseball up 3-0 –– its first lead since the fifth inning Saturday against Xavier University. That lead was quickly erased as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas scored seven runs over the next two innings.
