Even though the IU men's soccer team's season ended more than a month ago after a 1-0 overtime defeat by No. 1 see and eventual national champs North Carolina, freshman standout Eriq Zavaleta is continuing to receive accolades for his outstanding freshman season.
Already anointed the Big Ten Freshman of the Year along with unanimous All- Big Ten First Team and All-Freshman team selections, Zavaleta was named the Chicagoland Soccer News Player of the Year, the website announced Thursday evening.
Zavaleta is the second Hoosier in a row to win the award after former-IU soccer star Will Bruin took home the Chicagoland honors in 2010.
Zavaleta led the Big Ten in points per game (1.14), goals scored (10), and total points (25) during the 2011 season, becoming the first Hoosier freshman to lead the team in scoring since his own coach, Todd Yeagley, did so during his first season at IU in 1991.
