As IU welcomes Minnesota to Assembly Hall on Thursday night, I started thinking about the numerous transfers that the Golden Gophers have had to deal with the past few years. That turned my attention to the IU program, and I decided to look at the players that transferred from Bloomington (and are still playing college basketball) beginning with Tom Crean's first off-season in 2008.
Follow the jump to see how each former Hoosier is faring at his respective school.
Brandon McGhee (Georgia State)-McGee has bounced around at three different schools since leaving IU after the Kelvin Sampson turmoil in the spring of 2008. As a freshman at IU, McGee played sparingly and transferred to Auburn University for the 2008-2009 season. McGee sat out that season per NCAA rules and then packed his bags and headed back to his home state of Illinois to play at Wabash Valley Junior College. From there, McGee headed back down south to play at Georgia State University. Last season, McGee was the Panthers second leading scorer but he has seen his role reduced this year as he is averaging four points and two rebounds a game in 12 minutes of action. GSU has been an early season surprise in the Colonial Athletic Conference as first year head coach Ron Hunter is 11-4 in his inaugural season in Atlanta.
Eli Holman (Detroit)-After a much publicized exit from the IU program in 2008, Holman has spent the last three years at Detroit University where he plays for former IU assistant Ray McCallum. While at IU, Holman played in just six games as a freshman as he battled injuries and other troubles away from basketball. Holman has played in just seven games this season for Detroit due to talking a leave of absence in the fall. Detroit is 8-10 this season and Holman is averaging 12 points and six rebounds a game while logging 22 minutes.
Malik Story (Nevada)-A late addition to Tom Crean's first recruiting class at IU, Story played one season in Bloomington before heading back out west to play at Nevada. Story played in 31 games during his freshman year at IU and averaged five points per game. The Los Angles native was the leading scorer for the Wolfpack last season and has started all 15 games this year while averaging 14 points per game. Story was a preseason All-Wac pick and has the Wolfpack in position to receive an NCAA Tournament bid.
Nick Williams (Mississippi)-Story's roommate freshman year, Williams also headed closer to home after one season in Bloomington when he transferred to Mississippi. Williams started 29 of 31 games and averaged eight points as a freshman at IU. Now playing in the SEC, the Alabama native has started all 15 games this year for the 10-5 Rebels and is averaging eight points per game.
Bawa Muniru (Tennessee State)-Muniru spent just one season playing for Tom Crean as he played very little in 19 games during the 2009-2010 season. Following the season, Muniru transferred to Tennesse State where he has played sparingly in 10 games this season.
David Williams (UNC-Greensboro)-Even though he never suited up for the Hoosiers, Williams was a one time commit in the 2010 class. Williams and IU eventually parted ways and he has started all 16 games in 2011 for UNC-Greensboro while avearging just under five points per game. Much was made about Williams ability to play in the Big Ten and I think IU fans are just fine with the Florida native that ended up signing with the Hoosiers in 2010 (Will Sheehey).
Bobby Capobianco (Valparaiso)-This past off-season, Cappobianco joined Muniru as the second member of Tom Crean's six-man 2009 class to transfer. Cappobianco played in 57 games for IU during his two seasons and even started five games last year. The Loveland, Oho native is sitting out this season at Valparaiso.
